I had it done 4 years ago also... Fully awake.
It's so wild watching it ... ask for the video...they record the operation.. it's far out.
I didn't get any meds before/after .. only freezing eyedrops before the operation.... sat there about 5-10 minutes until my eyes were frozen and then 5/10 minutes later the procedure was done.
The sameday I could see better, however I just relaxed and kept doing the eyedrops. The next day it was unbelievable... just like the other guy said.. DVD scenes.. everything is so clear and the weirdest thing is you see more colors. It's unbelievable.
Before WITH glasses, I couldn't read the bottom lines of the eyecharts... Now I can read it with ease.
For the first 2 weeks you'll be adjusting and will be scared that your eyes are fucked up but it's all good... once in a while you'll have a blurry eye but it just needs an eyedrop.
Do LASIK today, you'll love it. Just make sure you're not getting PRK.. i've heard that's a bitch to heal.
Procedure for Lasik: They suck your eye with this little vacuum that holds your eye in place. They pull out this horizontal saw and slice your eye open. He holds that flap open and the laser starts it's magic. You'll smell something burning

It almost smells like the dentist when he drills a tooth. Once that's done... he'll flush your eye and then put the flap back over and smooth it out. Then he goes on to the next eye. For about 10-15 minutes you will feel normal and then the light sensitivity sets in. They give you these huge black shades that old people wear regularily. You get driven home and do the shots for one day. Next day you're perfect, just do occassional shots.
You can elect to have your eyeducts unplugged but I found it better to leave them in.
Enjoy the operation, it's wicked.
