Can you copyright lists of public data?

    Example:

If a company made a list of closing stock prices for the past year & put a copyright on the database... would that copyright be valid?

No, you cannot copyright things that are public if the person who first made the data public owns the rights.

IE: NASDAQ releases stock quotes, they in sense have made them, and would own the interest in it ,you cannot compile them and copyright it.

      Great

I just read something similar somewhere else... actually it talked about how to possibly protect such data (via EULA's with NDA and trade secret protection).
