What is SEROQUEL?
SEROQUEL®(quetiapine fumarate) Tablets (pronounced SER-O-KWELL) is a medication that is a member of a category of medicines called "atypical antipsychotics." SEROQUEL Tablets have been shown to be effective in the treatment of many of the symptoms of schizophrenia. At the same time, it has been found to cause fewer of some of the unpleasant side-effects of older medications that often cause patients to avoid taking their medication. SEROQUEL is taken by mouth and comes in tablets.

How does SEROQUEL work?
Illnesses that affect the brain, such as schizophrenia, may be due to certain chemicals in the brain being out of balance. These imbalances may cause some of the symptoms you may be experiencing. Doctors and scientists are not sure what causes these imbalances to occur. SEROQUEL is thought to work by regulating the imbalance of chemicals in the brain. Although SEROQUEL is not able to cure your condition, treatment can help manage your symptoms and help you feel better. For this reason, it is very important to take your doses of SEROQUEL every day or as your doctor recommends, even once your symptoms go away and as you're feeling better.

What important items should I discuss with my doctor?
Make sure you talk over the following items with your doctor:

Keep your doctor informed of how you are feeling on SEROQUEL.
Discuss any side-effects or other symptoms you are experiencing or questions you have regarding your treatment with SEROQUEL.
Ask about scheduling periodic eye exams.
Talk to your doctor and pharmacist about any other prescription or nonprescription medications you are currently taking, since certain medications may affect the way they work.
Notify your doctor if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant while taking SEROQUEL.
Tell your doctor if you are planning to breast-feed - You should not breast-feed while taking SEROQUEL.
You should call your doctor right away if you have any questions or concerns about your symptoms, treatment, or how you are feeling in general.

Remember to take your SEROQUEL every day as directed, and do NOT stop taking SEROQUEL without notifying your doctor. SEROQUEL, when taken as directed, can help you achieve a more normal life.

What are some important things I should know about my treatment with SEROQUEL?

During therapy with SEROQUEL, especially during the initial dosing period, you may experience light-headedness or dizziness, especially when standing up quickly or getting out of bed. To help prevent this feeling, rise slowly from your chair or bed.
Drowsiness can be a side effect of SEROQUEL especially during the first 3-5 days after you begin taking SEROQUEL. Use caution when performing any activity requiring alertness, including operating an automobile or other hazardous machinery, until you are reasonably certain SEROQUEL does not cause you to be drowsy.
You should avoid drinking alcoholic beverages while taking SEROQUEL.
Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated while you are taking SEROQUEL.

How should I be taking SEROQUEL?
SEROQUEL is available as tablets you take by mouth. You should take SEROQUEL every day or as your doctor has directed. To gain the most benefit from SEROQUEL, take the exact number of tablets your doctor has prescribed for you each day at the appropriate times. Regardless of how good or how bad you feel, do not stop taking SEROQUEL without notifying your doctor.

Remember that you need to give yourself some time to feel better. Your symptoms will probably improve gradually over the first few weeks of treatment. The most important thing you can do to make the most of your treatment with SEROQUEL is to take SEROQUEL the way your doctor has recommended. Taking your medicine the way your doctor has prescribed should help relieve your symptoms.

What do I do if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once. If you are unsure, speak with your doctor. There are several things you can do to help you remember to take each dose of SEROQUEL. A few suggestions are:

Take your doses of SEROQUEL at the same time each day.
Choose a daily event that will help you remember to take your SEROQUEL, such as at a mealtime or at bedtime.
Use a pill container that can hold a week's worth of medicine by the day of the week. Use it to help remind you of the medicines you need to take or have taken each day.
Use a calendar to note the date and time after you've taken each dose to help you keep track of when you have taken your SEROQUEL.
Keep a written reminder to take your SEROQUEL that can be easily seen such as on a refrigerator or mirror.
Have a family member or friend remind you when it is time to take your SEROQUEL.
Do I have to take SEROQUEL with food?
SEROQUEL may be taken with or without food.

What are possible side-effects with SEROQUEL?
Any medicine can have side-effects, and medicines can affect different people in different ways. Some people may experience some side-effects from taking SEROQUEL while others may not have any side-effects at all. In clinical trials, SEROQUEL was generally well-tolerated. The most common side-effects experienced by people taking SEROQUEL were dizziness, dry mouth, stomach upset, and light-headedness caused by rising too quickly from a sitting or lying position (also called postural hypotension).

Serious side-effects can occur with any antipsychotic medication. A rare, but potentially fatal, complex referred to as neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) has been reported. Another condition associated with antipsychotic medications is tardive dyskinesia, which can cause potentially irreversible, involuntary movements. Development of cataracts has been observed in dogs in association with quetiapine treatment. An examination of the lens is recommended every six months as a precaution.

It is important for you to contact your doctor or other mental health care professional if you have any questions or concerns about how you are feeling.
