I would say what is more interesting is the author of that article a friend of mine, Kevin Poulsen. He did some elite phone phreaking years ago and is now a writer. (ie was charged with espionage, went on the run, and supported himself by rigging radio station contests using his phone skills. -hawaii vacation/porsche) He was also held without bail for about 5yrs. Him and Kevin Mitnick both got fucked by the government, Mitnick was held for 4yrs+ without a fucking trial/bail hearing.
Anyone into phreaking?

Phone Phreaking was all the rage.
We used to use Applecat modems, they could naturally generate a lot of "control frequency tones".
It used to be, that the "sound"(Actually an electronic pulse converted for the phoneline) of a quarter dropping in to a payhone credited the next call with $.25. You could essentially continue to drop fake quarters on to a phone line, and proceed to use them up on a call.
You could ask generate tones that would knock an operator off the line. You'd esentially call in to a switchboard and get an operator. Your modem would generate a specific tone, and the operator would lose the line and you could then use it.
There's much more to it, but that's what I remember..Comment

I know in the 70's when boxing was getting big, Captain Crunch taught Steve Wozniak how to make blue red and black boxes. Him and Steve Jobs would make em and slang em for extra cash then later started Apple Computers."I felt victimized by the Ian Eisenbergs of the world" - Mary BurgerComment

I got to here before I zoned out and thought I should ask for the cliff's notes versionFeds bust DDoS 'Mafia'
By Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus
Published Friday 27th August 2004 11:02 GMT
A Massachusetts businessman allegedly paid members of the computer underground to launch organized, crippling distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks against three of his competitors, in what federal officials are calling the first criminal case to arise from a DDoS-for-hire scheme.
