I think that if someone have a horrible life that they decide they don't want, that's not indicative of anything by itself. If you have absolutely nothing to look forward to in the present or the future, why would you have to be mentally instabile to choose to end it? It seems a rather logical last solution if you indeed have no hope.
The people that use alleged suicide intentions as a way to get attention however have some issues to work on.
