I myself think it really comes down to the situation that the person is in.

Some people do it for the "cry for help" or attention. A lot of people go through things when they are at a young age that do not make sense to them once they are older, they feel lost, or betrayed. As this build up inside usually someone they count on or love will turn on them making them feel lost and not needed, once that happens the point of life is lost.

It also can come down to working on everything, life, work, friends, family and it all gets to be to much, it's an escape from doing everything you can and just not getting anywhere. It can build up and push you over the edge.

I don't think these sort of people should be looked down upon or anything. I think it's perfectly sane to just get pushed over the edge and not want to deal with it anymore.
