I was watching a documentary the other day about streets in the usa named after MLK.
In oregon they wanted to change this big street by the university after mlk.
There was already an mlk street or something in the area, and it is a tremendous inconvienance for businesses to have their street named changed.
Having to notify all their vendors, notifying their customer base, change all their letterhead, etc etc.
It was a stupid idea and all the business people very much didnt want it to happen.
The city council voted, and the decision was overwhelmingly in favor not to change the street name.
Then after that the blacks were in a uproar. Protesting and shit, and the liberal newspaper writers put a alot of negative heat on the council members, saying they are racist and other bogus shit.
Then they decide to magically have another vote, and decide to change their mind.
My point: In this country race is a money making industry, and blackmail is used to get whites to do things that arent in the best interest of their city/country. The fear of being labled a racist.

Having White Entertainment Television (WET) would be overkill wouldn't it?
All of my favourite shows, comedy, news, sports are all white owned and operated thru and thru. I don't need it to explicitly say "WET" to satisfy me.
I don't think ethnic groups would object to WET except that in recent history as KRL pointed out, there were plenty of White Organization and businesses. Unfortunately those organizations shut out everybody that wasn't white. This was 50 years ago. Many of you or your parents lived in it. I think maybe it's too soon to re-initiate any explicit labelling of institutions as "for Whites". That type of phrase has become stigmatized because of the recent past.
Maybe in 30 years it won't be such an issue, but now would be too soon and rather insensitive.
MLK day is a good day for all. It's a day to remind us that every race should try to live in peace which is what MLK advocated. He didn't advocate Black Supremacy.
I think their are better ways of celebrating black history than having a dedicated month, but if that's what the politicians and so called 'black leaders' want, I say fine. Do you really believe that whites are discriminated against more than blacks in jobs? NO. You just hear about blacks suing a company because it's great for ratings for news stations. I've been denied plenty of times but not once have the thought to sue ever crossed my mind, its life. There is a very small portion of black people that actually get jobs that they are not qualified for, the rest are actually qualified for the jobs they are applying for and they get them by going through the same steps that you do. Even after they are hired fairly they come into a work place hired as an affirminative action hire even if they are not. So being qualified and a minoirity your still discriminated against even after you get the job. The reason Asians don't have a holiday is because they don't complain. They come into the country, have good jobs, are already well educated and take over as the smartest students in high schools and colleges.
Mexicans don't have a holiday cause most of them can't legally vote.
Native Americans, well, the only reason some of them are still around is that the white man couldn't kill off all of them. The government hates it enough that they have to give them reservations and stuff. They'd be much happier if there had been a full eradication(BUT THEN THERE'D BE NO DUGMOR!)

i guess you can say i am among the minority because i am a woman. christ knows there are plenty of affirmative action groups for women and that disgusts me. are women in the marketplace treated as less of a commodity then men? sure they are HOWEVER it is up to a woman to make herself known and by doing that is by doing a job that can be given equally to a man, BETTER!
all this affirmative action crap has done is make each race and gender hate each other more. i would never want a job where someone had to hire me or give me entry into college just because i was a quota to fill. that, to me, is unjust.

Martin Luther King was a great man who lived and fought in a time when things were awful for African Americans in this Country by memorializing his birthday as a national Holiday i feel is a just reminder that we have come a long way. I feel that it should be a day that is tryly recognized as a Holiday instead of it being primarily federal offices and banks.
The man did a trendous amount of work in the progress of civil rights. His murder was untimely and unfortuante. I think it is honorable to have a day to recognize his work and the person he was and what he represented in a time when things did not show much promise

i work with people who arent white because they are qualified to work here. their skin color doesnt even cross my mind. i work with women who are better at their portion of the job then i am. we all compliment each other. luckily i work in an environment where anyone can say anything to anyone else without getting bent to the left. most dont have that option.
anyway to the point, i want respect because i earned it. i want a job because i earned it and my life will be based accordingly. i dont want a group to step in and i am not going to sue someone because they said, what i deemed to be, the wrong thing to me on one of my bad days. your life is what it is because you have made it that way.ICQ: 309756847

While I admire your fairness in dealing with all races and your co-workers you made an incorrect extrapolation when you said that they're at their job because they are qualified. The fact remains that many people are at their job for reasons other than their qualifications. Sometimes it's because dad worked there or has influence, other times it's based partially on race and gender. Because you wouldn't take race and gender into consideration during the hiring process, don't assume many other people don't.
I agree that life is to a large degree is what you make it. Another large part of your life however is due to circumstance and priviledge you're born into. No man or woman is self-made. We should all strive to make the most with what we're given. We're not all given the same resources to work with. This doesn't mean you have to be a failure. It's just recognizing that life isn't as clear-cut as making it how you want it. Some of us have limitations around us. Sometimes if we can't get in the front door, we use the back door. If not the back door, we try the chimne. Some of us will get in, some of us will not. That's the actuality of life.Comment

your statement is very realistic and i guess i should have noted that my statement was based on my own life and way of handling things (which works for me but very well may not work for others).
i do ask you though, someone who holds up a liquor store (for example), are they doing it because they absolutely cannot get a job anywhere doing anything (from corp exec to shovling shit to make a living) or are they doing that because that is the path they chose for their life?

I don't think ethnic groups would object to WET except that in recent history as KRL pointed out, there were plenty of White Organization and businesses. Unfortunately those organizations shut out everybody that wasn't white. This was 50 years ago. Many of you or your parents lived in it. I think maybe it's too soon to re-initiate any explicit labelling of institutions as "for Whites". That type of phrase has become stigmatized because of the recent past.
Maybe in 30 years it won't be such an issue, but now would be too soon and rather insensitive.
MLK day is a good day for all. It's a day to remind us that every race should try to live in peace which is what MLK advocated. He didn't advocate Black Supremacy.
I think their are better ways of celebrating black history than having a dedicated month, but if that's what the politicians and so called 'black leaders' want, I say fine. Makes no difference to me, it's just another month and I go about my business.
On for the record, I think MLK was a great guy and did a great thing, he got the africian americans the rights they deserve! I think that it is great that we celebrate his b-day, just like we celebrate Washingtons & we have president's day! MLK was a man that changed many things in his day!

When somebody holds up a liquor store it's because that's the path they've chosen. There is always opportunity as a shit shoveler in America and other countries in the world demonstrate that being poor does not mean you have to be violent (many extreme improverished places in Asia and Africa have very low crime rates). No one ever said life was fair, but people do not have to live their life with racism. People have the ability to grow past it once we all do our best to treat everyone the same. Why not have spanish month since there is such a huge population of them?
