Have you experienced Pool's new 2-phase auction? IT SUCKS!

Wow, I'm surprised at how much their new bidding system sucks. Basically, now their auctions have "2 phases". During phase 1, they capture the name and you make a sealed bid. You cant see what the current highest bid on the name is anymore, and you cant see what anyone else has bid. This phase 1 auction lasts for 3 days. Assuming your bid is within 20% of the highest bid, you then move on to phase 2 and have a day long auction with the highest bidders.

Laaaaaaame! Basically, people will now be overbidding like crazy, paying $5000 for a domain when the previous highest bidder was maybe only $200 (hence in the old auction system, the highest bidder would've acquired the domain for $210).

Sounds like they are trying to squeeze every last cent out of the domains.

Smart business really.. why let a domain go for 210 when they can get 5k this way?

Not so good for the people looking to snap them up and flip em for a quick buck, but I am sure pool.com will cry for them on the way to the bank.

You two are forgetting an important business ideal that gets overlooked far too often these days. If you want a business to be successful, you need to make your customers happy.

Customers will definitely not be happy over paying for domains using this new system.

Too early to tell if it smart business or not, its sort of like saying lightspeed doubling their monthly membership fee is smart business, it the short run more money in the long run loss of members.

Sure, some member will pony up to see Tawny but how many?

Seems to me this type of greed generally results in less market share and on the web market share means a lot.

Just my opinion but my guess is that the new system wont benefit their company in the long run

Well I am glad I scored some good domains before they did that. But they will definitely make more money that way.

Domain sales are all about how bad someone wants the name, and how much they will pay for it.

Pool is not lightspeed. Domain buyers have accounts everywhere and the company that snags the domains is going to make the money. As long as pool keeps grabbing a ton of the good names they will make more this way.

This only involves auctions for 1.. how about all the domains people grab that have no competition for $60?

it sucks... I got 2 in the blind bidding phase, and now that i think about it I bid too much for one of them

sucks that they consistantly get all the good names

When did we "double our monthly membership fee?"

if anything, we just LOWERED prices
