    I used to be all over so called "scammers" and "spammers". Now I just realized they have bigger balls and are smarter than most of is.

            There's nothing terribly smart about double and triple billing your customers. He is only as ruthless as he can afford to be, without $750,000 deposits he can't get merchant accounts, according to some court records at least.

            It's far more rewarding to make millions legitimately than by stealing it. Atherton is lazy and unscrupulous. I don't look up to him for the same reason I don't look up to Enron execs or bank robbers. However, I'd be dumb if I didn't watch what he was doing and try to improve upon it, or adopt it to fit a legit business strategy.

                                            I don't know, not in the circles I move in. Then again, I've never been TMF'ed. If that is true, and VISA processing can truly just go to the highest bidder, I am very disappointed. The smaller, honest merchant suffers while they hand the big accounts to frauders while looking the other way, after taking their extortion cut.

                                                                                Atherton and his friends lost their Level 3 connectivity because of the fantastic work of the anti spam community. Atherton is a favoured target because he is such a prolific spammer.

                                                                                What would you do if a man walked up to a child in a park and gave the child an A4 page with explicit sexual material on it ? That's exactly what Atherton and all other porn spammers do when they send porn spam into the mailboxes of children.

                                                                                I just got off the phone with Richard Webb at Security Operations at Level3.
                                                                                He was responding to the latest barrage of emails which I've been sending to
                                                                                pretty much anyone at Level3 management whose email address I could get.

                                                                                A little background, I started getting the "paris hilton video" spams about
                                                                                a month or so ago, all of them had the same URL on a Brazilian ISP and all
                                                                                of them were using hijacked machines, etc which were all getting past the
                                                                                SCbl. They were basically the same spam with different spoofed From
                                                                                addresses. It soon got to the point I was getting 8-10 a day so I finally
                                                                                used Sam Spade to browse the spamvertised site (it was useless BTW) but I
                                                                                finally determined that all it did was redirect to
                                                                                www.paris.extremexxxfootage.com which is hosted by Level3 and is listed by
                                                                                Spamhaus as being under the control of Jon Atherton/Supabill. I already had
                                                                                a 'bitch list' for Level3 so I started copying them in each time I processed
                                                                                one of the spams and within a day or 2 got a reply back from Mr. Webb that
                                                                                the site had been suspended pending investigation. The spam stopped
                                                                                immediately, then about 2 weeks ago it started up again, this time using a
                                                                                different URL on the same Brazilian ISP and redirecting to
                                                                                www.paris2.extremexxxfootage.com which is still on Level3 at a different IP
                                                                                from the first one. Again I started sending reports to everyone at Level3
                                                                                which prompted a couple of nastygrams from Brett Wentworth at Level3
                                                                                Security Operations. I learned later that Richard Webb was off for a few
                                                                                days last week.

                                                                                Since it started again the number of messages has steadily increased until
                                                                                it hit a peak yesterday at 35 in one 24 hour period. I have forwarded them
                                                                                all to Level3 as well as reporting them through SpamCop and after the 20 or
                                                                                so I forwarded this morning this I got an email from Mr. Webb asking for a
                                                                                contact phone # for him to call me.

                                                                                The gist of the conversation is that the spammer is claiming he's being
                                                                                joe-jobbed by one of his competitors and he supposedly was able to provide
                                                                                sufficient 'proof' for Level3 to remove the suspension on the site. I told
                                                                                Mr. Webb that this was complete bullshit and he knew it. Since he had
                                                                                already admitted to me that Level3 had told the spammer who was complaining
                                                                                about them it was clear that the spammer was taking it out on me for
                                                                                complaining by including my email address in every mailing he sent out. If
                                                                                the spammer was the only one who knew who the complaints were coming from
                                                                                then how could his "competitors" know who to target? He didn't have an
                                                                                answer for that. When he asked me why the spammer would continue to send me
                                                                                emails if he knew I was complaining I explained Rule #1 to him. He didn't
                                                                                have an answer for that either.

                                                                                Webb also claimed that until they started hearing from me there were NO
                                                                                complaints about this site. I told him that was pretty hard to believe
                                                                                considering the whole IP block is listed on the SBl and that the only reason
                                                                                that they weren't getting SpamCop complaints was that the Brazilian ISP was
                                                                                getting them all. He then claimed that most of the emails I was sending in
                                                                                had no URL in the body. I explained that with very few exceptions SpamCop
                                                                                was able to parse every one of them and could see the link so what was wrong
                                                                                with his abuse department? He's going to investigate.

                                                                                So what can we take away from this?

                                                                                Bottom line:

                                                                                1. Level3 passes complaints to their abuse department directly to the
                                                                                spammers without attempting to hide the identity of the complainant.

                                                                                2. Their abuse/security operations doesn't even take notice until you start
                                                                                really making a nuisance of yourself.

                                                                                3. Even when they do investigate they do a cursory job and don't bother to
                                                                                check out where the links redirect to.

                                                                                4. If you make a big enough PITA of yourself they might even call you back
                                                                                but don't expect a lot of satisfaction from the call.

                                                                                        It's funny to see our experts here praising L3 for pulling their IP space and "cooperating with the antis". Think again, why did adstats go to L3 in the first place? Directly allocated IP space @ L3 or UUNet is among the most durable there is for setups like these. In fact antis *HATE* L3 cause they don't give a fuck as long as they're being paid and get no nasty snail mail lawsuit letters...

                                                                                            Hook a brother up with a 5mil loan! I don't know about anyone else but I have a yahoo mail account that I keep because it transfers no matter what ISP i've switched and it only gets about 40 paris hilton spams a day and yahoo has pretty good spam filters these days.

                                                                                                L3 is a tier1 provider, it's not their core business to "screen" abuse complaints, just like UUNET, VERIO and the other big guns.

                                                                                                Do you know how much manpower this would cost for a tier1 provider?

                                                                                                Let me explain what a tier1 provider does for you:
                                                                                                They take a cable and plug it into their backbone, then monitor your bandwidth and charge your accordingly.

                                                                                                THE company receiving the service must put proper methods in place to deal with their services. It is their sole discretion what they do and how much liability they wish to carry.

                                                                                                Stop crying and saying L3 is bad blah blah, anti-spammers dislike the big tier1 providers because they are tier1 and control the b/w and can pretty much do whatever they want.

                                                                                                rbl lists are proving useless anyways, just give it a year or two and they will all be gone. Contextual screening will be the only way to go to detect spam.

                                                                                                                                Adstats.com did have some minor content links in other spam messages/websites but it doesn't at the moment.
