Let me put it another way... .you are being a bit naive if you think this particular athlete was not acting on the instructions of the Iranian government.

The Olympics is exactly like the UN except the delegates don't have fat guts. Iran had the perfect chance to make a political statement against Isreal (a country which is very close to nuking their nuclear energy plant/atomic program)... why... because the whole world is watching and it's the perfect chance to make a political statement.
