A great american company going to hell....

Was just reading that Levi Strauss will be closing it's american factories to produce their jeans overseas in china or some other 3rd world country.

So, here is another company that will be paying slave labor in some 3rd world country and still continue to over charge their customers like Nike.

    These companies....

best way to get ahead in this country is find a product and sale it to the masses. doesn't even seem like people give a fuck that the majority of the products that we buy are built else where.

Levi's... all I have ever worn.... don't like Lee or Wrangler... but I may have to change my mind.

Actually, found out that they already closed all their US factories and are closing 3 in canada in the spring. 800 people out of work now because of this.

when levis was founded jeans were about 8 bucks a paid, average high wage 400 a year, maybe they should have kept their prices at 2% of average wage

I usually wear levi's or dickies. It's a sad day, really. Just like when converse stopped making the chucks in the USA.

Though sad it may be, it's pretty hard to keep such a company going when you have a gov't that taxes every penny they make.. place all sorts of dumbass regulations on operations just so some senator's nephew can have a job..
And workers' comp insurance is through the roof..

Sure there are those companies that will run over there for the cheap labor, etc. , but there are those who have tried to stay here and do what is right, but are forced to do as they do because of our bureaucratic idiots that can't see 2 feet in front of their faces..

Well look at what happened to Japan when they out sourced to expand, now all the countries they used to do this have thier own Panasonics and Sony's.

Same thing will happen to the household names, they think they are smart in moving "offshore" but it will come back to bite thier asses in the future.

Same goes for the UK companies now setting up thier call centres in India, that will definately come back and bite them......

It may only be $2.00 right now but I bet yer its will be $10 in a few years and then more....

I dont even care what company makes the clothes I buy, if I think they look good on me, and dont cost an arm and a leg, then fuck it, I'll but it. Never have been a fan of jeans, im more of a white cargo pants guy

(Fuck foreign labour, most of the stuff is well made, but imagine who's making it when you buy the latest Nike shit or whatnot, some 14 year old could be supporting his dying grandmother with a few cents a day)

sad but true. these big companies would have spent a lot of time before they would invest Millions to start up an offshore company. so i just dont understand why 3rd world countries are being attacked (slave labor?) if in fact the sources of problem are those bureaucratic idiots. come on, what's wrong with cheap labor if you can provide works to other poor people and get the same quality of work.

I find this sad too...but then they have to compete.

I went out and bought some jeans the other day and the levis were only $19.95 don't recall if they were 501's or what...anyway I couldn't believe it $19.95..fuck man I was paying $25-$30 for Levis almost 20 years ago...and Wranglers were only $16.95.

"Slave Labor" is a matter of your own opinion
You can't compare what your society's labor does for workers to another countries labor force
The most important thing is that another "3rd World country" has jobs for thier people.
500 a month might go to far in the US but shit it might make them rich in their country

Thats a good point, as in some of these countries, a few cents a day could probably "pay the bills". Foreign labour isn't a bad idea, I think it's just abused. Hearing stories about 17 and 18 hour workdays in 90 degree warehouses making shoes... Doesn't seem like much of a life

Unlike other industries that improved because of newer technologies, the clothing industry has stayed the same.

The way they make clothes 50 years ago is the same way they make them now.

It's funny how the same people will make clothes for both Wal-mart and Hilfigure. but hilfigure will charge 10 times more just because of their logo on the shirt,, lol

Doesn't or at least shouldn't happen that way with 'legit' companies. It's certainly the case in the UK although I can't speak for the US. In the old day job, pre-porn, I used to travel to HK and China a lot to speak to suppliers and inspect the factories. Everything from health and safety to staff ages and general working conditions had to be above board. We had quite detailed records with photographic evidence kept to hand.

As has been said - there's no need to employ 'slave labour'. A GOOD wage for many of these people is still a fraction of that in the US/Europe which is why it is so much cheaper.

Have to agree on the other point though - eventually it will bite them in the ass. However at the moment they are given little choice if they want to stay competative.

However even when I was in High School and buying my own clothes I could not buy a pair of Levis regardless of what version they were for $19.95...but here it is 20 years later and you can.

So why don't you do something about it?

Call Levi Strauss & Co. and let them know that you and your friends will gladly help make their jeans for $1 an hour.

The real problem is people overseas will work for a fraction of the cost & produce a higher quality product these days.

They don't want to lose their $5 a day jobs so they work them like their lives depend on them.

I agree with you comrade. When the revolution begins and the streets are red with the blood of those imperialist dogs, we shall reveal our strength and the people will be victorious... When that glorious day comes, YOU my comrade and friend, will have a seat in the Supreme Governing Council.

Happy you agree that free markets and capitalism is a horrible disease. You will be justly rewarded when the time comes.

Unless Levi Strauss has suddenly become a charity, then they're doing exactly what any smart business would do. If you can make the same product for less, then you do it. Period.

Health insurance benefits in the US, which many employees seem to think they're owed at the expense of the company (reference the Von's strike) are another measure to look at besides the salaries. Add to that the 7.5% in SS taxes, UI, etc. that the companies have to pay for each employee and it adds up fast.

There was an article in TIME magazine a few weeks ago about this and apparently what we consider slave wages, are usually higher than the average pay in that country and the jobs are considered an honor to get. Therefore, you not only have labor for less money, you have labor who knows if they screw up, there are 100's if not 1000's willing to take their place.

Yeh you cant count on Wrangler anymore either....They closed their plant right before Xmas in Seminole Oklahoma. Laid 350 small town people off because they were going to move production out of country. It was really sad because most of those people had worked there for years and it was the 2nd largest employer in the town. Merry freakin Xmas

Most people don't realise that when they try to save $5 at walmart how much they are killing jobs in America

Levis is starting to get killed in competion in the Jeans market becasue so many people are switching to cheap jeans at bargain discount prices. If you want to blame someone then blame their competion who gets 12 years olds to sew in some squallor of a country for 20 cents an hour.

The same pair of jeans in America with unions is being produced at over $10.00 and hour with benefits.
                                                      Thanks

There used to be levi's stores (Called County Seat here). I can't help believe that Gap jeans has hurt Levi's too.
