I live here in Vegas, he lives on a farm in Texas, and was raised by his father. So the poor kid really never learned some of the really important things. Maternal care is crucial for the healthy upbringing of any child, but the motherly love some Japanese women shower on their sons is grossly destructive, according to Tokudane Saizensen (10/9).

Citing a man it claims to be a counselor for Lifeline, a telephone counseling service, the bi-weekly touches on the frequently rumored but often unmentioned topic of incest in Japan that gives an entirely new meaning to the Land of the Rising Son.

Mr. A, who claims to be a Lifeline counselor who can't be named to protect the privacy of his subjects, says he received a call about one year ago from a 19-year-old Tokyo university student who claimed to be in a sexual relationship with his own mother. The relationship started at 17 because the boy touched his private parts and emitted a white fluid he had never seen before. He asked his mother what it was and that apparently led to her beginning to help him masturbate. Their forbidden ties had escalated to the stage where she now serviced him orally.

"What shocked me was that the boy was worried about whether his semen was harmful. He didn't seem to have the slightest concern about his mother helping relieve his sexual tensions, or what she was doing," Mr. A tells Tokudane Saizensen. "They were addicted to each other. He couldn't stand alone without her and she couldn't be without him. In a normal parent-child relationship, even a kid of junior high school age would have a fair idea about semen, but to not know while of university age and ask your mother for help only reeks of over-protectiveness. I bet his mom will turn up together with him when he first starts work."

Mr. A claims to have dealt with over 20 cases of mother-son incest in his eight years as a phone counselor. He says one schoolboy used to peep at his mother while she showered or used the toilet. She caught him, but rather than punish the child, she started a sexual relationship in the hope that doing so would relieve him of sexual urges and stop him from sneaking up to look at women outside the home.

Another schoolboy's mother caught her son in flagrante delicato with his girlfriend and responded by banning her child from seeing the girl and instead servicing him sexually herself.

Discussion of incest is taboo in Japan, but current Land Minister Chikage Ogi raised a stir in the Diet over 20 years ago when she pointed out that 525 calls made to a contraception hotline were about incest-related problems and complaints of maternal ministrations of sons had doubled.

Typically, mothers who seek sexual solace from their sons are divided into four categories. The spoiled type without a partner; those who idolize pets or stuffed toys and view their son as the greatest object of their love; monopolistic types; and, women who can't take responsibility for their own actions and are always blaming others for their problems or mistakes.

"Based on the cases that I dealt with, boys about to undergo entrance exams are at greatest risk from incestuous mothers. They want to get their boys into a good school and then go on to a top company. That's why the women will do absolutely anything to combat something that stops their boys from studying," Mr. A tells Tokudane Saizensen. "The women get into a psychological condition where they're aware that sexual urges can stop their children from studying and feel that they're the best option for countering the craving. Often, in the background to a woman like this is a husband who has failed to take enough care of her."
