    Ways to make money from being hotlinked

    My grandfather always told me that behind every problem is an opportunity.

    Hotlinking is a problem. It sucks down bandwidth and may slow down your legit pages' load time leading to problems with TGP submissions and other issues.

    What are ways that you see in extracting lemonade from this lemon of a problem?

    Possible ideas I've read before

    If an image is hotlinked have it appear as a default hotlinked gif image -- preferably an image that has your ad and url

    Any other ways?

    If they are deeplinking, pop up hell with offshoreclicks or other CPM providers would be good.

    Any other ideas?

              Well, there isn't much money to be made really from hotlinking.

              If you put up a banner, it will still cost you bandwidth, and won't make you any sales at all (too much trouble to open a new browser windows and type the url of your site).

              Better just to block it, and get on with life if you ask me

                  ... change apache settings, so html will get serverd on any hotlinked image, this way you can pop consoles ... or run exploits ... or whatever ... no need to thank me, I know that I am perfect !!

                                      I agree with another poster, change filenames and directories.

                                      put up a 404 redirect for files that no longer exist.

                                          Can you not re-write .htaccess for who is holinking by URL so that if a certain URL hotlinks you can pop up a
                                          .htpasswd password protected area dialog box, after that you can bring then to an AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED page for which you can custom re-write and put your sponsors on.

                                          Just a thought, i'm sure it's possible.

                                              I'm not sure if google will index .jpg files. If it did, you could always just change your server settings to display .jpg as text/html and put an optimized page on there, or just one to feed PR to other pages.

                                                                                                  once i fucked up with the antihotlinker and i was redirecting on my galeries, i got some bans before i noticed the prob

                                                                                                  so stay still, just block it ;)
