Your first mistake was buying a Compaq..

To install 98 you would have to format and repartition the drive to FAT32.. just boot up with your Windows XP CD

I bought the computer from a supposedly reputible computer outlet
(PC World) in England. You are supposed to make your own.

PC World? They just love Packard Bell, Compaq and eMachines because they buy these low quality machines in bulk and pay almost nothing, then inflate the prices to make a greedy profit.

With the amount of money they charge for one Maxtor 120GB drive, I can buy TWO brand new Western Digital 120GB drives online and have them delivered the next day before 12pm.

I would take the machine back and demand a refund.

Their business practices are notoriously shady, their salesmen are like cockroaches, their prices are absurd, and their machines are made from tacky low grade and old components ESPECIALLY the memory and monitors.

Fujitsu and Mesh provide higher spec, high quality machines for like 40-50% less than the price of PC World. If you pay £700 at PC World, you can get a better machine direct from Fujitsu or Mesh for £400 with all the same warranties/customer rights/etc, and I'm not kidding.

ya could format it and install windows 2k pro it is pretty simple has older look and is stable for windows that is and you would not have to repartition cause win2k runs on either format

I bought an HP and didn't get a XP CD, you have 2 make your own and it says about 3 or 4 times you can make it just once. If
you stop before it's done your fucked.

So one morning very early I started 2 make my XP CD, only thing it didn't say you have 2 have a DVD, I'd already started so I couldn't quit, it was 5:30 am, had to leave it setting there tell a store opened up and buy some DVD's. Not 2 happy, 1st PC I've bought in years always built my own.
