I know it's nothing major to other people but for us local Vancouver folks it's pretty chilly.....Monday morning suppose to be -20 with windchill...FUCK ME!!!

I have over half an inch of ice on my pond and water fountain. Been making sure there's a hole in the ice all day so the koi are alright. Now it's going to be even colder tonight and they're talking about a snow storm Monday night to dump the most snow we've had in years.Comment

Do they shut fountains off in places that are used to getting freezing temperatures? I wondered this as I walked by a commemorative fountain yesterday that had tons of big icicles hanging off it and a frozen pond, yet was still running.Originally posted by PersianKitty

Maybe a bubbler in the pond is what you need. Keep the water moving so it doesnt freeze, at least in one spot anyway.Originally posted by PersianKitty

There's a pump pumping water at the rate of 7500 gallons per hour through the ponds, streams and water falls. The moving water isn't frozen. It's the water on top of the pond that's frozen. You have to keep a hole in that ice to let gases escape that could hurt the koi. As for the fountain. I'm afraid if I turn it off, all the water in it will freeze and I won't be able to turn it back on. I poured a 5 gallon bucket of hot water over the thickest ice.Originally posted by nathan_f

I'm more concerned with water levels of both the pond and the fountain. All the outdoor spigots are frozen right now along with my autofill for the pond. As for a hole in the pond ice, I've got two little floating deicers on it.Comment
