Do you believe in the "Big Bang" universe theory?

Won't this turn out to be another "the world is flat" or "the sun revolves around the earth" stupid bullshit theory bred from our own ignorance that people will one day laugh at and say "can you believe those fucking retards once believed that bullshit, what were they? morons?"

    I'm guessing it will.

There's a mathematician that's supposedly solved the Poincare Conjecture, which is the theorem that would tell us the shape of the universe, so an answer to questions about the origins of the universe might not be too far off as well.

I think that the big bang will turn out to be "sort of" right. Just like Newtons laws until relativity came around.

No it won't. The Big bang was the start and will be the end. Its a part of a never ending process.

Big Bang is not a matter of belief, but a fact. No rational person argues that the big bang did not occur. They argue over what caused the big bang to happen.

The big bang theory violates the theory of Relativity. If there was a big bang, then there's a center where it happened, and absolute speed can be measured from there. Einstein showed that a center in the universe leads to a paradox.

It also violates the Relativity because the edges of the universe have to be moving faster than the speed of light.

Can you show where it is claimed as fact? How was it proven? It seems a bit unlikely that it can be proven.

I read about where they heard the sound that is supposed to of been the big bang. But rather that sound was actually the big bang or not, is just a theory.

I reccomend watching the whole program, or reading the book, but this is a developing theory on how the big bang happened.

About 15 billion years ago a tremendous explosion started the expansion of the universe. This explosion is known as the Big Bang. What exisisted prior to this event is completely unknown and is a matter of pure speculation.

                                Big Bang is fact.

When science turns into religion I can't help but laugh.

The whole point of science is that it's dynamic, and that it doesn't find truths but strong and weak theories. This goes for every branch of science that relates to a context not defined by science itself. If the context is defined by science itself - like it is in formal logic - there is a chance of finding truth because all the rules were made by science and are therefore known. However, as soon as science touches objective reality, finding out the truth can be considered impossible, if only for the fact that we have no way to escape the limits of our own subjective existence.
This is even more the case with those sciences that formulate theories about phenomena that we can't replicate in a controlled environment.

So, in short: even though the Big Bang theory may seem the most likely theory we have, there is no way we can actually prove it to be true. All we can do is try to falsify it, and if we fail at that, the theory gets confirmed, not proven. And obviously, since we have no way of actually proving it to be true, there is always the possibility that it will eventually turn out to be false.

But that means you base your beliefs on faith rather than knowledge, which is pretty much the antithesis of science.

You really are a moron! LOL.

You say the theory is fact but that the origin of the 'bang' is pure speculation. How can you call something a fact when there is no even remotely plausible account of its origin? I suppose you can if you're an idiot.

Here is an article outlining some of the many problems with the theory.

You say the theory is fact but that the origin of the 'bang' is pure speculation. How can you call something a fact when there is no even remotely plausible account of its origin? I suppose you can if you're an idiot.

Here is an article outlining some of the many problems with the theory.

                                                  I don't claim anything about it's origins.

Cause something CANNOT just form out of nothing.

With this stupid theory, in the beginning there was NOTHING. That means, no color, no air, no atoms, no sound, no light, no darkness, NOTHING.

From that something formed? What are we fuckin stupid. Where did that something come from? Just happend? Stupid scientists!

The FACT is the hubble constant and the redshift of galaxies. The THEORY is the big bang. If you have another theory that explains why galaxies are redshifted then that would be just as great.

                                                        1) An empirical generalization; a statement of a biological principle that appears to be without exception at the time it is made, and has become consolidated by repeated successful testing; rule (Lincoln et al., 1990)

                                                        2) A theoretical principle deduced from particular facts, applicable to a defined group or class of phenomena, and expressible by a statement that a particular phenomenon always occurs if certain conditions be present (Oxford English Dictionary as quoted in Futuyma, 1979).

                                                        3) A set of observed regularities expressed in a concise verbal or mathematical statement. (Krimsley, 1995).

                                                        THEORY

                                                        1) The grandest synthesis of a large and important body of information about some related group of natural phenomena (Moore, 1984)

                                                        2) A body of knowledge and explanatory concepts that seek to increase our understanding ("explain") a major phenomenon of nature (Moore, 1984).

                                                        3) A scientifically accepted general principle supported by a substantial body of evidence offered to provide an explanation of observed facts and as a basis for future discussion or investigation (Lincoln et al., 1990).

                                                        4) 1. The abstract principles of a science as distinguished from basic or applied science. 2. A reasonable explanation or assumption advanced to explain a natural phenomenon but lacking confirming proof (Steen, 1971). [NB: I don't like this one but I include it to show you that even in "Science dictionaries" there is variation in definitions which leads to confusion].

                                                        5) A scheme or system of ideas or statements held as an explanation or account of a group of facts or phenomena; a hypothesis that has been confirmed or established by observation or experiment, and is propounded or accepted as accounting for the known facts; a statement of what are held to be the general laws, principles or causes of something known or observed. (Oxford English Dictionary, 1961; [emphasis added]).

                                                        6) An explanation for an observation or series of observations that is substantiated by a considerable body of evidence (Krimsley, 1995).

There is a field of physics that investigates what happens in vacuum (which means 'nothing'). Those guys would tend to disagree with you. Things do happen out of nowhere. They can track activity, even in 'nothing'.

I believe that there are some accounts of the big bang theory which posit that the big bang occured in a 'super-universe' of some kind, within which the present universe is contained. That might explain the present universe, but the origin of the 'super-universe' becomes problematic. In other words, what caused it? The idea of something evolving from nothing defies human logic but it's a problem I doubt we will ever solve. The theory of the origin of life suffers, to a lesser extent, from the same problem, as does the creationist theory: i.e., God created the universe but who or what created God?

This is funny fucking thread. When I became an adult webmaster I thought I was leaving all this shit behind. Its good to know I'm in the company of such deep thinkers though. Personally, I believe reality is defined by each person. Different societies give us more or less freedom to make these choices for ourselves, but we as individuals decide between fact or fiction. You can call it all theory, but in truth what we choose to believe is basically shapes our reality. Religion, science, gov, the net, media, gfy, friends, family etc... all offer us choices to explain shit, but ultimately each of us makes up our own minds. Ofcourse, the choices we make do matter. Most of the solutions offered are trying to sell you shit, or control you in one way or another. Anyway, I'm back to my own big bang theory which pretty much sums it all up for me, and involves shooting big loads of cum on bangin amateur girls faces You can't beat that theory! btw If you haven't played duecex Invisible war (I should site it as a big source for my current theories layed out above) its a kick ass game (Four alt endings with some deep choices you'd all likely enjoy).

I know I couldn't believe in God even if I wanted to, I know I couldn't believe Hitler was right even if I wanted to, I know I couldn't believe the earth was flat even if I wanted to, etc.
I'd say rationality doesn't give freedom but takes it away... it's impossible to believe something that is inconsistent with the rest of your beliefs if you are aware of that inconsistency, I think.

Our universe is actually nothing more than a certain amount of matter inside a giant's coffee table. A thousand of our years = 1 hour in giant time. The giant that owns our "coffee table" universe is thinking of firing up his skill saw and cutting up our "universe" for fire wood in about ten minutes, or 166 years our time.

I'm a firm believer in science and scientific theory, however my gut instinct tells me there is way more to the Universe than we as Earthlings are seeing and even capable of understanding and comprehending.

So in answer to your question I have to say Big Bang my ass. It goes way way beyond that simplistic concept. Personally, I'm beginning to think it never really began at all, it just always was, like time and space themselves, there is no begining and there is no end.
