it's pretty cheap...hotels cost $17 CAN a day...and that's 3-4 star...it depends also on what beach u want to stay on..

Pattaya, Phuket, Hua Hin....
You can get DSL all over Thailand now with TA or TOT.

From my point of view the 2am curfew ruined Bangkok. As did the crazy war on drugs. Personally getting locked down in a club and having to piss in a cup with another 500 party goers while some random thai cop stares you out isn't really my idea of fun.Comment

as far as cost of living... i have a friend who gets a whopping $1500 a month fixed income from his pizza place in boston and he is considered a white-hobo he has to live so cheaply.... then again he spends alot on whores and drinking every day... so clothes and his pad and places to eat get pushed aside for the 'more important' things....
in the eyes of the thai people any white man is 'rich'.... if you make more than $150 a month they think you're rich... but if you're from a 1st world country, you better be making decent cashflow if you think you're gonna get the same amenities you had in your old country as they generally cost the same if you are upper-crusting it..... 5 star dinners tend to cost almost the same as in the usa... same with 5 star hotels, trendy nightclubs, high priced hookers.... automobiles cost 30-50% more here, especially high end Benzes etc....Crypto HODLr

I guess it really depends on the cop at the time. When I was there for Sonkran (thai new years) when the war on drugs was probably at its peak. It was actually very scary to watch the news nightly where they would actually show drug dealers blown away by the cops, these are not censored images like we get in western society these are pictures of people with bullets through them and there heads half missing. you can rent nice villas in phuket at 5 minutes bike ride from the beach from 10 000 baht ( 254$)
i m staying in bangkok and i rent my two bedroom appartment for 15 000 baht . the condo has 2 swimming pools, sauna, jaccuzi, a tennis court and a gym. 5 minutes walk from the skytrain...
i heard there are still some other appartments for rent here at 17 000 baht ...

in bangkok you can rent an apartment for for $200/month that would cost $3000/month in San Francisco.
and you can walk around in the poorest parts of town without fear for your life, and people will be laughing and having a good time.
if foreigners could easily buy property there, i would live there.
