    Anyone here afraid to fly?

I can understand if you have a bonifide phobia. But a few weeks ago I was in line at the liquor mart, and the girl behind the counter is asking everyone "do you have air miles?"... and this older fucker in his late 50's behind me says "I never fly, never will.".....
    I say "Why not?",
He looks at me point blank like I'm nuts or something and says "Too dangerous! Haven't you ever seen what remains after a plane crash?"
I think to myself 'this guy is a fucking moron' and proceed to say "Uh, statistically you have a far greater chance of being in a horrible car crash than you do a plane crash."
He says "Oh hogwash, when planes crash people almost always die... when cars crash you have a better chance of living"

I'm thinking at this point the guy is a complete retard, so I shake my head, get my bag of booze and my receipt and move on. No point in telling him there are millions of motor vehicle accidents causing death every year, and only a HANDFUL of plane crashes. People dying in cars outnumbers plane crash victims by something like 50,000 to 1. Wasn't about to stand there yammering about it back and forth with a twit who has obviously spent too many years in the clueless zone.

Anyone here think like this idiot?

I don't have a problem with flying but if anything is within this country I prefer to road trip in a big phat vehicle where you can chill with some tunes and hit up all the little hot spots along the way. I like to take my time and just enjoy the time.

I guess it's just that the guy's fear was born out of ignorance. If his fear was simply irrational I could live with that.....

                    "I'm afraid to fly"
                    "why?"
                    "I don't know, I just am"
                    "Okay"

See what I mean? In this case, irrational fear makes sense..... but what that guy said was reasoned and well-thought-out in his mind, yet was pure idiocy.

In another life I'd have run him down in the parking lot with my car.

I have no fear of flying but I can understand the fear.. In a car crash it happens in a matter of seconds and your dead or injured.
In a plane crash you are going have a few minutes to think about the fact that you are going to die no matter what. I think I would prefer the fast and hard car accident rather than the slow decent to inevitable death =).

Agreed, but when you look at it from purely an odds standpoint, it is far far far far FAR safer to fly than it is to drive.

That old fucker was trying to play the safe bet without acknowledging the odds whatsoever.

I feel very safe in planes. My mother is petrified though.

A woman I used to work with can't fly. It's kind of the opposite of what you're talking about, though, CD, because intellectually she knows her fear is irrational. I suppose it's a true phobia. She had to travel a couple of times a year to interview artists and always went by car, bus or Amtrak. One time she was utterly determined to get over her fear - ended up having to get off the plane before takeoff.

I get claustrophic if the plane has to sit on the runway for too long, but once we start taxiing I'm fine and dandy.
