Not to piss on your parade but when she said "I can take the change in fives", I believe her. Had she given you that, she would have been stuck with a 50 and not enough change for the next customer who'd pay with a 20 like most customers do. But I can understand that it sure is frustrating.

Was it smart of them to be unprepared like that? Absolutely not.

That happened to me often enough that whenever I have 50's or 100's, I nicely ask them "can you break a 50" before they ring up my items. Works everytime, especially when I ask while making sad puppy eyes.
