The trilogy Blue, White and Red by Krzysztof Kieslowski are some of my favorites that aren't very well known.
If you want to check these out, on January 8th the Independent Film Channel is showing all three back-to-back starting 8pm.

I found this out today because I was furious that I'd missed Master of the Flying Guillotine, which it turns out was showing on the friggin Sundance Channel.

Anyway must see movies if you want something else than the mainstream blockbusters:

                  La Haine
                  The big blue
                  Virgin Suicides

                    - a movie about a group of french legionaires in dijouti

                    42 up
                    - the sixth installment of a documentary film series which chronicles the lives of a group of boys every 7 years from age 7 onwards. Now the characters are 42. often poignant.

Cold Comfort Farm - pokes gentle fun at the Merchant-Ivory genre, turn of the century novels, etc. If you like the Merchant-Ivory films but also appreciate subtle satire, you'll love it. (Actually it's been a while since I've seen it; it may not be all that subtle.)

Mostly I like mind-fuck-films, so keep 'em coming! (Stir of Echoes, Frequency and The 13th Floor, for examples from the thread.)

(Edited because "obscure" wasn't the right word, and I don't have the right word handy.)

I don't even remember it getting a cinema release in the UK. I hadn't even heard of it before I watched it on a transatlantic flight. It has been on cable a number of times though.

Prime Gig was great. I also loved Clay pigeons with Vince Vaugn and Joanquin Phoenix.

To die for (probably over looked )

                                      Waiting for Guffman is awesome.

Also loved the Man who wasn't there and Secretary.

Usually Lions Gates films are the ones that are more obscure but really great. I believe Novacaine was the first one we saw of theirs and every trailer was over the top.

                                                  - the sixth installment of a documentary film series which chronicles the lives of a group of boys every 7 years from age 7 onwards. Now the characters are 42. often poignant.
the british version? I saw that on tv..I was thinking the other day that it is almost time for the next installment.

I was at a lan party years ago, when Alice was playing. It was surreal walking into the living room, seeing 10 people all sitting down, quietly watching the movie, nobody talking they were so drawn into the strange film. That is still the only time I have seen such a large group of people watching a movie, where nobody was talking. (Good luck finding the film for rent anywhere, it's pretty rare)
