I Just Saw Napolean Dynamite

Thats a movie? I have never heard of it.

I heard it was off the hook funny.
Definitely on my list.

Napoleon Dynamite
A catchy name for a movie, but not a name that fits its owner: the nerd of nerds at Preston High in podunk Idaho, a misfit for much more than just his name. Sporting a tumbleweed of kinky blond hair atop his gangly slope-shouldered frame, breathing through a troutlike open mouth, speaking in a monotone by turns belligerent and resentful, peering out at the world through half-closed eyes and an oversized pair of aviator glasses, he is almost an Expressionistic caricature of adolescent discomfort. And the unknown actor, Jon Heder, gives not so much a performance as a mere presentation: here I am, like it or lump it. His unfamiliarity (is he really like that?) harmonizes beautifully with his many discomforts: his clumsiness with the opposite sex ("I see you're drinking one-percent. Is that 'cause you think you're fat?"), his mortification over his closest relatives (an older brother involved in an Internet courtship, an uncle pathologically nostalgic for his footballing heyday in the Eighties: "It's a time machine, Napoleon. We bought it on-line"), his bond of alienation with the only Latino in his class, his favorite pastime of solo tetherball. The clever credits sequence, composed of unappetizing plates of food and assorted other mundanities (a Chapstick, a library check-out card, and so on), correctly forecasts the relentless quirkiness of the film, a feel-odd comedy that takes a hard turn at the end toward a feel-good comedy (not without adequate preparation: a closed-door practice session in which the hero "gets his groove on" with a dance-instruction video found at a thrift shop). The equally unknown director, Jared Hess, whom we might like to imagine got to know his star by way of alphabetical seating in Study Hall, would appear to have undergone some sort of artistic epiphany while watching a Wes Anderson film: flat, squared-up images, dealt out in a kind of hammer-and-anvil rhythm. The consistency of it all, not just the rhythm but the tone, is ultimately persuasive. The viewer is given plenty of time to attune, to adjust, to acclimate. He is given no special inducement. Anyway, hopefully they do this time, and actually go see it. Because nothing worse then seeing shitty movies like Anchorman top off at the box office, and have great independent comedies like this, flop. Although this is by no means a flop per-se, as it cost very little to make. Just saying, it should be receiving feasible numbers such a great flick.

Funniest part is when he throws an orange at Uncle Rico's truck. Then hops over the gate, and falls.

Very odd comedy I put it up there with Adam Sandler's Punch Drunk Love" as a dark comedy.

Napolean Dynamite is by far the best movie I have seen in a VERY long time!!

Everyone said it was such a great movie, but I thought it was terrible.

It was weird for the sake of being weird, not for humor, and really just didn't do it for me.

I had to apologize to my friend for convincing him to see it with me.

this film and dodgeball were my top 2 comedy films of the summer.

all great movies with "Welcome To The DollHouse" being one of my all-time favorites

so far, "Napoleon Dynamite" is my favorite movie of 2004. I've seen it twice and liked it even more the second time.

If you like Wes Anderson movies like "Rushmore", "The Royal Tennenbaums" or "Bottle Rocket" you'll love this movie. If dry, higher brow humor like that isn't your thing, you most likely won't care for this movie. This isn't a crowd pleaser, big summer type movie. It's much deeper.

Royal Tennenbaum's was really funny. Not quite sure if Nap. Dynamite is better, considering how lackluster the script is. In essence their was no plot.

As kbizzle said, the characters are just too amazing. The homosexual, sounding 32 yr old brother. Pedro, the monotone mexican. Uncle Rico, the retarded uncle living in the past. And finally, Napoleon, the funniest of them all. Just his comedic timing/expression/ and emphasis on words like "sweet" "idiot" is classic. I say idiot, you say idiot, blah. It's not funny, it's a jaded comment. But Napoleon says it, and it's a catchphrase.

So long statement short, the characters/acting really lifted this film comedically. Not so much this "wonderful film, that had twists and turns".
