Funny how it came out of nowhere and smoked its OSCARS competition. Great movie. Great depth of character without being overtly preachy.

It was a very good movie - it is interesting how Polanski remembers his childhood - the scenes of bodies lying all over the streets, the wheelchair coming out of the apartment window etc, but I think that Adrian Brodi didn't have the skills to pull of the main character - at some parts he seemed to be doing a Stan Laurel impression - but still a very good movie.

BTW the best movie I ever seen about the war and its effects on people was "Pasquilinis Seven Beauties" - anyone who has seen it will never forget the female Commandant in the POW camp.

I thought a lot was Holocaust-cliche. There's a Nazi SS officer shooting a bunch of prostrate men in the head, there's the obligatory gun-jamming part, there's the poor family in the Jewish ghetto selling all their possessions for pennies on the dollar, there's the Jew working as an officer for special perks, there's the "token" German soldiers with a heart, there's the tear-jerking scenes as the liberators roll into town ...

I can't remember the last time before the Pianist that I paid twice to see a film in the cinema. Not only was the story told brilliantly but I was also struck by the camera work and set design. They did so much with what is basiclly different shades of gray.
