    Freehosting a dead horse?

Business model wise... are freehosts dead? Or is there still a chance for a new freehost, IF marketed properly among the webmaster community?

I see only a few ones survived, but maybe all the other ones simply did something wrong...

Of course, we're talking about no redirection, and a single banner on top approach. No ridiculous headers and footers.

If you don't believe me on that, you are invited to lick my balls.

bandwidth is way too cheap to put up with even that minimal of bullshit
SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR.
Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.
Let me repeat... A 120 x 60 button and no more that 3 lines of DEFAULT SIZE AND COLOR text.

          That's my general view too.

Not to mention that most webmasters know that the free host will most probably close its doors and take the traffic with them.

There's also a ton of webmaster info about the 'evil' of free hosts and the necessity of 'being in control of your own business'.

FSN was great at the time. Directnic is even better.

i'm not a newbie now so it is hard to answer through the eyes of one but I recenly had a conversation with someone on another board about freehosts.

There was a time a few years ago that I felt I had to use them if I was going to do tgp galleries but these days I wouldn't go near them. I am sure there are honest ones out there but it is very much the case of one (or a dozen) bad apples spoiling the bunch. At this moment in time I wouldn't put my reputation in someone else's hands praying that they don't screw me over and therefore tick off everyone to which I have submitted.

These days you can get hosting for as little as 50 cents a gig..if you aren't going to make that back then you need to consider what and how you are doing it.

Can anyone tell me about www.webair.com or have any opinion looking at what they offer with dedicated plans? Even a general feel for the company.

                        Thx Ruff...

The problem with freehosting, as its open to abuse, i.e. people use them to post child porn, stolen pics, illegal stuff.

I would think free email accounts would still be a good idea, as people like then for odd emails. Webased ones would be best as you can set up to include an advert at the bottom of the page/email when its sent.

hosting today is so cheap that if you can't afford it you probebly shouldn't be here anyway

Free hosts are not being accepted in more and more places these days. Major link lists doesnt accept them for quite a while already, and almost all TGPs are went that way too for a reason. Top lists that looking for quality traffic are also have a no-free-host clause in their term. So if a webmaster wants a real deal in the biz he just have to stay away from free hosts, or they just cant get any good traffic...

If you are established its a no brainer but there are always new people getting in the biz and lets face it there are a ton of kids who dont have a credit card or whose parents wont let them use theirs that they need to get their start on a free host. Make a few bucks, and then show their parents, lookie what I can do so they eventually do get a credit card.

So besides the obvious cheaters and scammers there is some real demand for a freehost, so if done properly you can still get some traffic through it, what you do with that traffic will determine whether or not you make any money off of it yourself. Thinking that you are simply going to throw up a banner and watch the system make money for you isn't really a good way to approach the situation, and when that doesnt work out, you have another "bad apple" free host closing its doors and redirecting traffic. All because the initial business plan wasnt that well thought out.

                                    Take Luck!
