It's a different story for the poor fuckers in 3rd-world countries who are don't have the option, ot are just too poor.
When I was visiting my family in South Africa a couple of months ago, I checked my email using my sister's machine. My regular amount of spam tied up her phone for over half an hour, and over there you pay for phonecalls by the minute.
My point being, spam costs money, especially for poor people. I'm sure most of you guys would sing a different song if checking your email would cost you a dollar every time.Converting like a mofoComment

We're misscommunicating here. Everyone can filter spam, the connection speed has nothing to do with that. But even with all your filters set up, you're still having to download all the spam, and here is where the connection speed is an issue. Every time I checked my mail at my sister's place, the cost of the phonecall was about $1, (no flat rate for local calls in many countries, you pay by the minute) because it took that long to check the mail. Like I said, the majority of my spam is blocked at the server. It never gets to me. I DO NOT download it. I only have to download about 15-20 spams a day and those are moved to my deleted items folder. The technology exists to block spam quite effectively and very inexpensively. Instead of complaining about spam to people who can/will do nothing about it, complain to the ISP so they will implement a spam blocking solution.Originally posted by mule

What's the problem. I have turned of one of my comps for just two days and when I got back it online I just received 2984 Spam Mails. About 500 where not catched by the filter, but it takes me just 10 minutes to delete themComment

15-20 emails is insignificant compared to the total volume I would have if I weren't blocking. If it takes more than a minute to download that many emails wherever you are, find something else to do. I assumed you were talking about hundreds of emails (which I can download on dialup in just a minute or two). Your email isn't that important. If it were, you would be able to afford an alternative. Filtering spam is a fucking waste of time. It's a temporary mesure that only serve as a non display settings. It's doesn't do anything to stop the spamming. I speak of experience with my hotmail accounts that are filtered to death but still receive a ton of junk mail. It makes me lauph when i see some poeples stating their absolut beleif in filtering technics. It doesn't work unless you are sending an e-mail the other way. It's called counter spamming by spamming them back. This way, i found out the spammers do eventually remove you. And if it is send from a interim e-mail, it makes that user aware that they are fucked up by spammers.
Their is no perfect solution, and we do all agree on that. But i think filtering isn't a good solution anymore if it's not linked to a more agressive action...

Since that obviously can't be done, you need to settle for the next best thing. Maybe...but you may be a bit too fatalistic about spammers. In my book they can be stop. If you start with a mentality that they never will be stop, no ones will try to stop them. That's my point, that before you can acheive something, you need to think that it can be done. It's not a question of beeing unrealistic, but more to have the thoughs that will help you to find solutions to the spamming problem. And you could say that it's one person against big corp of spamming. The fact is, that it only takes one poeple sometimes... For me filtering is like, getting your arms beside your body, bent your head, kneel and pray, and hope god will solve/stop the spamming. I don't see it happens unless you put more resolve into it. I also saw a software using P2P...it was name spaminit or something like that. But i had some bugs with XP. Well there's so many filters available, if people truly do not want to download spam or however their email system works, they could prevent some of it. I use Yahoo email for a lot of sponsor related things and 99% of my mail goes to the bulk folder. If they can surf the net, they can use a service like this for free instead of downloading from programs like Outlook etc.Originally posted by mule

Unwanted advertising is now a fact of life. It takes me maybe 60 seconds to delete 500 spam emails. It never bothered me. But I'll tell ya what does bother me. My postal mail box or PO box crammed full of paper junk mail, waiting 30 minutes on hold to get customer support from a broken english speaking operator in India, all the while listening to advertisement after advertisement for services I would never need. Plus the 5 or 6 telemarketing calls I used to get everyday, which made me not want to answer numbers that showed as "Unknown" or "Out of area" on the caller ID are something to complain about. Time is a valuable thing. Nonstop sales pitches that are very time consuming, compared to a few seconds or minutes to delete email that you don't even have to receive in the first place, if you use the right services or filters, is a whole different story.
And whomever is sending that much spam to an area of people living off of $400 a month, seriously needs to scrub their lists a bit harder
