The XL1S is a step above the GL2 or the Sony VX2000. It is probably overkill for shooting porn.

My boss uses this mini DV he produces some awesome videos . But the camera is only half the story the std lens needs to be changed to the 3.4 to 10.2mm wide lens . Apparently its a far better lens for porn videos gets much closer to the action. You may be able to purchase the XL1s with this lens . If not it will add a $1000.00 to the price. Then don't forget to get some quality lights the stupid little light that fits on the hots shoe is less than useless. Get a set of 3 quartz lights a watch the quality of you videos improve !!

I love that camera but I hate it that it does'nt have that preview screen.

I've heard a lot of great things about it.

Then this camera would be a fine choice as long as you keep in mind the cost for lenses and such. It takes a lot of practice to get the hang of using it, it isn't a point and shoot kind of thing.

You can always buy a small cheap monitor and hook it up to that. Thats what they do in the film studios so that the crew can see the action.

Kinda figured that... point and shoot is ok... but I come from a SLR background and I am pretty good with lighting and camera settings and such....

And with all the extras I need and the cost of these, that is why I am looking for someone that has one and want to get their pro's and con's of it.

It might not be a bad idea to rent one for a few days. Some places will let you take the rental cost off the purchase price if you buy it after testing it.

Cindy your correct we use this camera almost every day and we link it to a small 20" TV so the whole cast and crew can see what's going on The quality of the XL1s is the best for the price and the wide lens overcomes the one problem i have with this camera its focusing. I sometimes set it for auto focus and the camera has a tendency to hunt backwards and forwards in low light conditions. The wide lens seems to overcome that problem on the odd occasion we use autofocus. Apart from that i would recommend this camera 100%

Professionals have hi capacity and extra batteries and if no LCD screen is of no concern to you (most people think otherwise) then go for it. It's a SUPER camera. Definitely overkill for just streaming web media though. I like the fact you can swap lenses.

true, depends how mobile you want to be and how much stuff you want hanging off your camera, I'm not saying it's a bad camera, if your just shooting in a studio and not on location then by all means.....it's a great camera.

Depends on the intended method of distribution. If it is strictly Internet then I would agree with you. If it will be DVD then the XL1s is a great option although the Panasonic has been getting rave reviews.

Thanks imageman and cindyff.... sounds like you guys reall like it... This may be the way I go then. I will have to see who around town carries them and see it up close and get a demo, but so far, this is the camera I am leaning toward.

You are better off buying the GL2, the quality seems to be excatly the same on both cameras. With the XL1 your paying like an extra 2k just for the interchangable lens feature.

That is a very valuable feature.... don't you think? That is why I still use an SLR... I like different lens's for different shots. So... to me it is worth the extra 2k.

I would highly recommend the Sony VX-2000 over the Canon XL-1. We have both, and the Sony is much better for the price tag. The Canon has many issues involving focus, low-light conditions, etc. VX-2000 all the way.

Try Samys in LA they are good for deals. Or do a search on the web this normally results in a good price. We managed to get about $800 off list but it was quite a while ago I think Beach Cameras in NY supplied ours. You have to be real careful of the NY dealers they give you a great price for the XL1s then add fantastically high mail charges . One company wanted to charge us $250 shipping and handling. Forget that its a $36.00 insured two day air with UPS or Fed Ex

                                                          Hope that helps

Oh also if you add accessories it may be better to buy those from another store as these NY guys add on extra $$$$$ to their accessories to make up for the low cost of the main camera

The only issue i have found using both the XL1 and XL1s is low light hunting ( The lens moves in and out of focus as the low light prevents the sensor from finding a place to focus on ) and that is with the standard lens in very low light situations on auto focus. It is not a problem on the wider lens which is by far the best for porn work anyway, but its a price issue as you need the wide lens and at $1000 + added to the cost of you XL1s its adding up to an expensive outfit. I suggest you call the customer service dept of Cannon and talk to some tech person ask if the focus issue is now resolved ?

truth is, if you are just shooting for the web most any DV cam will do.

but IF you ever go outside of a controlled environment where you must shoot in ambiant light you must at least have a 3-chip camera.

                                                              IMO.

for really dramatic images (for web work) you SHOULD use wide angle and get in close.

this is because most surfers view web smut in small windows due to BW limits, getting in close allows you to focus on the most interesting parts of the shot with maximum detail, and thus allows you to be more aggressive in encoding to try to keep file size down and still put out an acceptable image.

lots of factors here to be sure. POV probably requires smaller camera (hard to hold big camera and jackoff into girl's mouth at same time)

for gonzo video 3chip and wide angle are must have i think.

with 3chip camera you can do away with standard flat lighting scheme most guys use, and get into more dramatic point lighting which models the human form better.

IF you look up the chrysler million dollar film festival online all they could use was the panasonic dvx100 camera and a laptop with final cut pro. ITs amazing stuff. I had just bought my vx2000 and wanted to sell it to get the panasonic but the boss (my wife) wouldnt let me lol.

I recommend SONY VX2000 - that is if you don't desperately need changing the lens from time to time. Canon has these great lenses - 3x wide, full manual, etc. that allow for greater control.

The XL1S however is bulky and for "erotic" work I definitely recommend the SONY. After all Anabolic's still using SONY VX1000 on most shoots.
