They have a remote collar that sprays a very pungent lemon scent under the dogs nose....really bugs him and teaches him, WITHOUT actually hurting him.

Actually King, yes, I have had and notice I said had, friends that used them to train their dog... That dog was never the same... fucked it up mentally.

Dogs are smart but not that smart... there could be a 100 things running through their little heads at the time of the shock... how are they to determine what they are being shocked for?

For example... You have a dog that pisses when it gets excited... so you shock it every time it does this... so if you were the dog... woult you think your were getting shocked for being excited? or pissing? or both?

An animal cannot reason the way humans do. If you have a dog that pisses when it gets excited... you just say no and pick it up and take it outside... I will eventually realte to the pee and going outdoors.

Look, I am no expert, but you have to remember... thees are dumb animals... dumb in the sense that they do not understand things the way we humans do.

Two of my animals are dogs... One is an Akita I raised from a puppy, another is a Chow Semoyed Mix I rescued from the shelter... My Akita is very well traind and all I have to do is look at the dog and it knows what I am thinking... The other was 8 years old... raised by others (and I have no idea how they trained it as far as their methods) well traind but does not listen as well as my Akita.

With my Akita, the only training tool I used with her was a kennel, and a loud voice. The kennel was only used for training, not punishment. She would sleep in there all day, when she woke, she went outside and I would stay until she did her business... once she did her business she was allowed in the house... that dog was (fully) house broken in 2 1/2 months... to the point where I did not have to worry about little accidents.
In fact at 6 months... we were out 4 wheeling, had some trouble and had been away from home for 12 hours... not a drop or pile of anything.

So again I stress... animals DO NOT NEED these devices to be well trained... all they need is love, understanding and patience and if you cannot provide that to properly train an animal... again, you should not have one.

Just my but I am sure there are others that would agree.

JRT's are definitely a challenge. Sounds to me like he needs a creative outlet for his energy. You should keep in mind that a working "terrier" he has been bred for a very long time to take game animals to ground, meaning it's his reason for living to chase animals into their burrow, fight and kill them. Without having continuous replacement (outlet) for what he is bred to do, this energy will manifest itself in most likely destructive bahavior. Lots of people try to alleviate this by getting a companion for their JRT's. This is a BAD idea for more than few reasons. First off, many of these people get another JRT. So now you effectively have a gang mentality with a couple of destructive little killers. I know someone who did this despite being advised otherwise who was ordered to have both of them put down becuase they kept getting out and killing all the neighbors' cats and dogs. Another companion animal will usually just make the situation worse, either by creating dominance struggles, jealousy, getting twice the destruction like I already mentioned or a host of other problems.

Go see an animal bahavior specialist, they can often time make some suggetions that can be incorporated in your training and day to day interaction. They also might have some ideas on how to provide some enrichment to keep him mentally challenged and occupied.

Hey King... one last question and I will drop this....

              Do you have any children?

If so, you you use that on your 4 month old infant to train it?

If not, why? Imean if that are harmless... why stop at animals... use them on your children too.

I like those dogs...They just need a lot of space. But must say this one didn't destroy anything...It is trained, and listens very well. I wish everyone did listen that well :-)

I have a Jack Russell. They are very intelligent dogs. Went to petsmart for their 6 week training program and it helped a lot. Teaching the dog with positive re-enforcement (treats) and lots of praise helped. I bought a shock collar for the jumping on people and furniture. I don't use the shock feature at all, the collar has a tone feature, that's all I ever had to use only twice and he got it that he is not to jump on people visiting. I hate the shock feature and I would never use it. I like the tone feature on it though where it sends out different tones and you can you use that for very extreme behaviours. The best thing to do is spend 10 minutes every day working on some training tricks and a walk. They really love the attention and it shows them who the alpha dog is too. This is my experience with my Jack Russell and I have had him for 2 years and I love him and I enjoy having him as a pet and fun family member.

You need to play with them AT LEAST 20mins a day. Thow a ball down steps or a frisbee in the yard. They are very active dogs and you need to wear them out or they get board and will entertain (distroy things) themselves.

I have already stated that if I bought one I would use it on myself...through all levels of shock. From what I have read the minimal level is that of a static electrical shock such as a person recieves from carpets...or sometimes when exiting a car...and that is not painful in the least...but does get ones attention.

You say you don't have kids and never will... hey me too. Pets are just like children, they depend on you to teach them and love them and to keep them safe from harm.

I don't know you personally, but if you put one of those on your dog... I hope he jumps up and bites your balls off... Those are just plain mean and cruel.
