Check it out. I co-founded Mr. Skin.com and got out of celebrity to make money in the music business. There is money out there in mainstream, you just have to work on it, I mean really target your site and use paid search as well as other techniques (i.e. organic search optimization, traffic swaps, CPA deals, etc.) to get traffic and then continually tweak the join process. It is a bit harder than adult in some ways. You don't have the competition and the abundance of sites adult has (that cuts down on revenue), but you also don't have the traffic. In many cases you have to create traffic.

The other main difference in mainstream versus adult is simply this: mainstream webmasters who have competing sites never promote one another, whereas in adult, many sites in the same genre promote one another's ventures, the logic being that if I don't sell them on my subscription site, someone else in my niche will and I might as well get a piece of it. The reason for this divergence is simple, branding. Online adult sites really, unless you are one of the big boys, aren't interested in branding their experience as much as they are in getting the sale. Brand loyalty is a tough sell when you are talking about breasts, a better set always wins. Mainstream sites want to use the web for branding as much as they want direct sales. So here is a little tip when choosing what mainstream program to choose, look for the one that has the best sales process and not the biggest brand name. In the end, the brand will win only a small fraction of the audience over, but a slick and well tailored join/subscribe/sales page, wins everytime where it counts, in your wallet.

At least in my experience, to make money in the mainstream world you need to create a resource that many users have a common interest in, once you do, then build subscription benefits around that (i.e. insider's newsletter, exclusive content, exclusive community, sound familiar?). But stop thinking $39.95 a month, as far as mainstream goes, you just never get it. What you do get is the users who will sign up for annual memberships and lifetime memberships or low monthly rates ($9.95 and below).
