Anyone know the whois server for .de ?

Do you know what return value to search for when testing if a domain is available? It's not "No entries found" or similar like all other whois servers I know of. I simply cant find the return value to search for when prompting whois.denic.de on port 43.

Not sure if this is what you need but when I query our whois for an available de domain I get the following result:

whois.denic.de doesn´t work. The whois is done as a *.jsp like that:

whois.denic.de does work when you query it with a script...

I only know what he gives as return value if you use the whois client from RIPE.
It´s connect, failed, free and invalid.

Here we would like to inform you about version 1.00.0 of the DENIC-whois-Server (whois.denic.de).


This whois is compatible with IDN and active since March 1st, 2004.


These instructions do not apply to the online whois-service available here on our website. The additional finger-service currently offered (finger.denic.de) will no longer be available as of May 3rd, 2004 - 14:00 CET.


The whois-service provides information about domains below the ccTLD .de.


Some details about the current version:- Query of a domain returns only the status (connect, failed, free, invalid)
- Query of domain data is only possible via the flag "-T dn (domain)" or "-T ace,dn (domain)".
- Output of information is standardly returned in UTF-8. Other character sets can be specified via the flag "-C (Charset)".
- Queries can either be for the IDN-domain (i.e.: dänic.de / denic.de) or with an additional flag for the ACE-form (i.e.: xn--dnic-loa.de / denic.de).
- For nonASCII domains the output always includes the IDN-domain ("domain:") as well as the ACE-form ("domain-ace:").
- The date of the last update for the domain being queried is given in ISO-8601 form:
yyyy-mm-ddThh:mm:ss+(time zone) (for example: 2004-03-01T10:00:01+0200)



The following additional flags are available: -C (Charset)
The declaration of the In-/Output character set. Default: UTF-8. Possible values are: US-ASCII, ISO-8859-1, UTF-8, UTF-16.
The declaration of the character set is case sensitive.
-T st|status domain (Default)
Specific query of domain status.
-T dn|domain domain
Specific query of domain data.
-T st,ace domain

The help function of the whois-Server can be invoked with the "HELP" switch (case sensitive).

Remarks on the Syntax of Different whois-Clients

There are different whois-Clients that may not all support the flags used by our whois-Server. Try using two additional dashes before the actual flag, or enclose the flag with quotation marks, or try a combination of both, e.G:


whois -h whois.denic.de -- -T dn domain
whois -h whois.denic.de "-T dn domain"
whois -h whois.denic.de -- "-T dn domain"

To avoid problems it is advisable to use the whois-Client of RIPE (Download-URL http://www.ripe.net/ripencc/pub-services/).
