Well don't you run like 90+ thumbs per site ? and around 700k of traffic?
That's a shitload of processing for it to just load thumbs.
A quick solution might be to cut a block of thumbs out from a site and see if the speed improves.

You're misunderstanding the meaning of his statement. He meant UCJ is so light on the server that it's equal to loading 3 thumbs which takes next to nothing. Serving HTML is just as hard on a server as serving thumbs. It's just a HTTP request. Serving those thumbs isn't the problem. If it's not the script, I'd almost guarantee it's something that could be corrected in httpd.conf.
