Go find the BBC World service and watch the intervew they did with Hans Blix, he says now there was no WMD at the time of the war. They had a documentary on that whole war and what I found fascinating is that Soviet Russia and the US where in total agreement in this situation. They wanted a war between Iraq and Iran but they didn't want anyone of them to be victorious so they armed them accordingly and succeeded in what they wanted to accomplish.Originally posted by charly

The US never provided Iraq with a single WMD...period. US companies sold Iraq materials that were dual use and when the use that Iraq was applying to the dual use materials became certain such sales were forbidden but some companies continued sales through indirect means...because of greed...and when this was learned some of those companies had a price to pay. The only weapons that were supplied to Iraq was some cluster bombs and they were not supplied directly. The response to that is yes and no. Companies are at the present selling goods to countries around the world that are on the approved list of sales...but if some of the things that are currently being sold...come to some sinister use then they will be banned for sale to the country that is applying a sinister use...and it sometimes takes time to discover this. I do have no doubt that the government directly approved the sales of some dual use materials that it would have been prudent not to...but the times were such that we were trying to prevent a decisive loss by Iran or Iraq. Geo politics are not fun and games...but are serious matters...and are not black and white...but with shades of gray...and are not pleasant...but it is the responsibility of the US government to do what it perceives to be in the best interest of the nation. We are not compelled to seek approval of the UN or the world and in my opinion should never put the Nation in that position.
