Many underage webmasters can handle themselfs and its not a problem. Others, regardless of there age seem to think conventions are a free ticket to act like an ass. This has nothing to do with age.. assholes are asshole regardless of the date they were born.
I hate to be checking Id's at our parties, but we will have someone doing it before drinks are served to them. What they do in htere own rooms is up to them and I dont give a rats ass, but we are not going to allow underage drinking at our events to the best of our ability.
I drank before I was 21 for sure.... but that was on me. I choose to drink and did not put anyone else in a bad legal postion by doing so.
I'm not going to jail because someone cant handle themselfs.
SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.
How about : "If you are not mature enough to handle yourself in public...I don't want your fucking business!"
Agreed! That statement should cover message board conduct as well. Right on Aaron!

First off....If that were the case then it would be fine with me.
Secondly....Ask about my public image before you make false statements.
There is a reason that my email box is stuffed full iof private party invites for Internext. While everybody posts their concerns of the lack of parties...I am trying to figure out how to hit all the ones I have been invited to.
Does that make me any better than the rest of you? No....But it does say something about my public image.

IMHO...
There are webmasters who are well over 21 that are not mature enough to handle this. However, underage drinking is always a problem and that opens the event sponsors and the venues up to legal problems. The majority of the problems that I have seen from those under 21 are isolated to people from the U.S. It would seem that the minors in our country are not advanced enough to know how to act appropriately. I have underage friends from Scotland who come to these things and they manage to maintain control and act like adults.
Putting the drinking issue aside?.Vegas is a gambling town with a 21 years of age requirement for that. Minors are not even permitted to stand and watch. With the sponsors stepping down their parties this year....This is going to leave fewer and fewer places for minors to hang out without forcing them into public places and increasing the risk of bad publicity.
Your thoughts?
I don't think there is an answer. There's just a real cultural problem in the US in regards to the way that people are brought up to act in public. Some people were never taught that there's a way to act at home and a way to act in public.

Tell me you've gone mental. He said, IF you can't contain yourself from acting like an immature shithead in public he doesn't want your business. What's wrong with that? I can safely attest that I wouldn't want to waste my time talking business with someone like that either.
As for 18-21 yr old people that DO act professionally, that's another story. I judge no one solely on their age, and I'm sure Aaron is the same way.

Originally posted by necronookie Why not treat it like any 18+ club would? Let 18-20 in with big marks-a-lot X's on their hands and wristbands for those 21+?
That way if something were to happen, at least you can show that you were proactive in detouring the underage from drinking.
Use wristbands like the man said. It's cheap as fuck, and it'll keep you, the party-thrower, from being fucked in the end. I'm 18, I could care less about drinking, my boss is sending my to Vegas to make connections to other companies. If someone buys me a drink, I'll drink it, but I'm not going to go out of my way to find someone to buy some kid a beer.
When I went to Erotica LA, I wasn't being a fucking mark. I saw these dudes double my age acting like little girls around some of the broads. Horrible. Age doesn't mean maturity, especially in this business.
All I can say is that... the parties were the best part of the expo last year... it was my first and I had a great time... however, I must give these sponsors credit... they take a huge risk when throwing these parties... Serving alocohol to ANYONE, not just minors, is a big responsibility, if they have too much, cause a wreck, hurt anothe person, YOU are responsible. Seeing some of the people last year and some getting prety out of hand... Again, I give these sponsors much credit to take that risk.
Good luck to you all, and I hope to see you in Vegas again this year.
Interesting topic, eventhough i jump in kinda late.
Im from europe, where as you all know drinking is legal from 18, even some countries 16 if im right. I am currently 20.5 and this is one of the things keeping me away from internext now in jan and keeping me wait till summer for it.
I agree with 90% of the replies here, where if your 25 and drunk you can act like a 16yo ass and when your 20 and mature you can fit in perfectly fine.
Living in europe I have my opinion about the US laws. Being able to be do porn when you are 18, but not being able to visit a stripshow till your 21, sounds kinda unlogical to me. Or being able to get a driving license when 16, and not drinking till your 21.
Anyway.
When i was in sweden last winter and got asked for id and rejected to enter into a normal bar for a beer when i was 19, i officially hate getting checked for id. (however i understand the bars covering their ass towards the law) Here in Spain (be it good or bad) they are a little more flexible with those matters, so maybe thats why i hated being idchecked and feel like a complete ass.
This is one of the reason ill only go to internext in summer! When i come over i wanna be able to go where i want and not be denied for some stupid age law.. (yet i understand the owners who want to cover their ass)
I will agree that the 18+ crowd is a problem. Not so much that they cause problems, but that they could be the source of outside troubles. The last thing the industry needs is a raid on a party in one of the suites with naked women, booze (and drugs) every where and a couple 18 year old in the room. You know that the media would just love to work that story over...
As for the argument about being 18 so you old enough to be sent to war... I have no sympathy for that argument. Our military is all volunteer. No one made them join up. If they were drafted that might be a different matter...
I can attest to the fact that there are some individuals under 21 that act in a more mature manner than some adults...
We've all heard about, or witnessed a few, 'adults' that throw up all over the hotel rooms.. and trash the place.. yada yada.. and act like 12 year olds trying their first beer..
But the facts have to be considered.. the law is the law.. and that's what any judge must adhere to, no matter how much he/she might agree.
The rest just depends on what risks, as party throwers, they wish to take...

And THAT my friend is the entire point of this thread.
I honestly think it?s based on the maturity of an individual.
I?m probably one of the youngest webmaster here (20) been doing this since I was 18. I have never been to a webmaster get together. I feel since the legal age is 18 to get into this business why should they be treated like they are still children. Young yes, but mature that just depends on the person themselves. I have seen younger adults they are more mature the older adults. I don?t see that as a problem.
The drinking even though I hate to say it but it (since I?m not 21 yet) should be regulated. No sponsor wants to get in trouble for serving alcohol to minors that?s just not good publicity.
In the end it all bottles down to two things. How mature and professional an individual is. If they are 18 or 40 if they show the characteristics of being someone you can do successful business with throw the other shit aside. Everyone goes to have fun and enjoy themselves as well as do business. The people that can handle this and not make an ass out of themselves and/or others IMHO are the ones that should be there regardless if they?re 18 or 40. Just my
