Where have you been for the last 20 years? the Americans have always relied on mercenaries/contractors. During Gulf War I the ratio was 1 contractor for every 100 servicemembers, Gulf War II has brought that ratio down to 1 contractor for every 10 service members.
More contractors on the battlefield, less American military parents with their sons and daughters coming home in flag draped coffins.
Don't get me started with the actual guys pulling the triggers and protecting VIP's, I am talking about the cooks, and the guys and gals flying the UAV's. You might be suprised what really makes up the United States military today compared to 50 years ago.
The new company hiring all the trigger pullers in Iraq is a U.K. firm with a long history of putting bad guys in their place. If they would only loosen the ROE a little, maybe the problems we're having now might not be such a problem.
Look into what Executive Outcomes did in Sierra Leone with less troops, money and time than what the United Nations did.
