when im looking for a designer:
- look at his site: this obvious place to start is often overlooked,
but if a designer is careless or sloppy with his own site, why
trust him with my site?
- a designer's site should at least LOOK like he understands
design basics, not like something put together by a senate
subcommittee!
- if there are broken graphics links, if pages are built too wide
or are so cluttered and confusing it resembles the president's
tax reduction bill, run ? don't walk ? to the next designer on
the list!
- if the first page is a flashy entry page totally irrelevant except
to prove he can produce a flashy page, or is a time and
bandwidth-wasting ?Welcome To My Site? page, the designer
probably doesn't understand or even care about the basics of
design, move on to the next.
- a few words about grammar and spelling are appropriate:
chatrooms to the contrary, people expect to see proper
grammar and spelling on a web site, and are painfully aware
of carelessness.
- not everyone can spell, but a designer should have enough
gray matter to use a spell checker or have someone proof his
site for glaring errors.
- a web site that looks great on a PC can look awful on a Mac;
one that looks great on your computer can look dreadful on
your neighbor's. variations in system defaults, monitor sizes
and resolutions, etc., can make a huge difference in the way a
site looks to your visitors. Don't be afraid to ask questions. your
online presence is too important to leave in the hands of
someone who doesn't understand how to present you in
the best possible manner.
- boxed software with pretty templates does not a designer
make!!
