You are an imbecile if you are suggesting that the emergency repsonse to this disaster was adequate. There was an absolute emergency preparedness failure on the local, State, and Federal levels for the disaster which has befallen Louisiana, Mississippi and other portions of the Gulf Coast struck by Hurricane Katrina.

Unlike somewhat unpredictable disasters such as earthquakes, there were studies of likely scenarios that would occur should the Gulf Coast suffer a hurricane equal to or greater than Katrina. Since you like timelines, even though there was ample time to understand the magnitude of the emminent disaster, the proper steps were not taken to cope with it.

The fact is, Dubya was too busy vacationing and fundraising to bother with what was to come...

Your response is simply to shrug at the massive loss of life and utter chaos and the accompanying breakdown of civil order, and say that what was done was timely and appropriate.

I sincerely hope that you are never put in a position of responsibility for emergency response, since you have not a clue how to even understand, let alone deal with pain and suffering on the scale that is being experienced currently in the affected areas.

The rescue effort was underway within 24 hours after the breech of the Levees...within 48 hours of the storm hitting land. Within 72 hours of the storm hitting land...thousands were being evacuated from the city and this is still ongoing.

Could more have been done in less time...maybe...but communications of all types were virtually eliminated...which I would assume played a negative role in the effort.

None the less rescue efforts began within 48 hours.

BTW...FYI...I donated a large amount of money to the Salvation Army...the charity of my choice.

The federal response to a disaster is 5-7 days.

The mayor told everyone on Sat/Sun to have food and water for 5-7 days
because it will take that long for help to arrive.

The last big hurricane in Florida it took the feds about 4 days to
get in there so this is pretty much right on schedule and this is with
preplanning and staging.

What's a total breakdown is the city and the mayors actions.
The city could have used school buses starting on Saturday to
get people out like their disaster plan calls for !

They could have used ambulances to take out critical hospital patients
but they chose to ignore the evacuation because they wanted two more days
of tourist money !

Maybe? There were people in "rescue shelters" for several days without food, water or adequate sanitation. Thousands more were (and continue to be) stranded and in even more dire straits due to the feeble rescue efforts undertaken in an untimely manner by the government.

Experts had been predicting such a disaster in this area for a long time. However, the Bush Administration cut funding for projects which would have shored up the levees over the past several years, while giving unprecedented huge tax cuts to the rich, running up record budgets, and increasing the national deficit (how ironic that he got elected in part by accusing the Demos of being tax and spenders - he is the biggest borrower and spender in history who has given the most relief to the least needy).

Hopefully you will never have to endure such a disaster with such an ineffective initial response.

At least your President was getting plenty of rest on his nearly five week vacation (Dubya holds the all-time Presidential vacation record), and he still had time to do some partisan political fundraising thousands of miles away while people in the South were suffering (and our military people continue to die in Iraq).

How good of Bush to stop by for some photo ops several days after the fact.

The people were warned to take food and water with them into the shelters. I personally saw at least one women who was interviewed while waiting in line to be searched prior to entering the Super Dome and she was in point asked why she did not have any food and water with her (she had only the clothes on her back). Her answer was...she expected to be supplied with food and water. At this point in time it has been approximately 108 hours since the storm hit land...approximately 72 or so hours since the levees were breached. Tens of thousands have been rescued and evacuated during this 72 hour period. How many hours could have been cut from this time...I don't know...maybe you do...how much more could have been done...I don't know...maybe you do. Is the Federal Government totally responsible for any failings...I do not think so. The failures begin with the local government...then the State Government...in my opinion. It is my understanding that the Governor initially only called up 2,000 Guardsmen. She then claimed she asked for 12,000 Guardsmen...then she claimed she asked for 40,000 Guardsmen...but when the interviewer tried to pin her down to what exactly she asked for and when...she would not answer. In addition the Federal Government does not control the Guard unless they are activated for Federal Service. State Governors control the Guard and State Governors usually have agreements with various other states for Guardsmen if they need additional help. It is up to the Governors to call for the use of their Guardsman and in what numbers and deployed to what areas...and if need be to call upon their fellow Governors...with whom they have agreements for additional help.

I have seen several officials from the Army Corp of Engineers interviewed and all of them stated that the cuts in funding did not have anything to do with the breeches in the levees. They stated that the problem with the levees is the fact that they were built to withstand a cat 3...and not a cat 4 or 5. They stated that upgrading the levees to cat 4 or cat fives was never in their foreseeable plans...and further more they stated the intended work on the 17th street canal break would not have prevented the breech in the levee.

Since I am American...yes President Bush is my President. Did I vote for Mr. Bush to become the President in either of his elections. No. Am I a fan of President Bush and/or members of his administration. No.

If you don't own a car and there are not buses/other free/affordable transporation already in line to evacuate you, tell me how you are going to evacuate from an approaching (predicatable) catastrophic storm?

When you live paycheck to paycheck, or are in a hospital or in similar conditions, how are you going to stockpile reserves of food or water?

One reason we have a Federal government is to respond to national disasters such as this (unless you think it is only the local residents of LA and MS that are being affected).

Honestly, we should not even have to count on the numerous non-government disaster relief organizations and public suplimentary funding, yet as we find time and time again, they do a better job at getting relief where it is most needed.

Keep waving your pom-poms and cheering on the great LATE relief effort. Amongst the people most effected though, your cheers are falling upon deaf ears.

As I said before, hopefully you and yours will never be in such a predicament as to have to experience such a disaster, and then count on your government to come to your aid.

Considering that this disaster was predicted and predicatable, I would say that effective relief should have arrived as soon as the main storm had past, and Government provided evacuation support should have occured before the storm even hit.

Preventative measures (such as shoring up the old levees), should have been done well in advance of the storm. Even without that, the disaster response had ample time to be organized, staged, and implmented, without the loss of life and suffering that occured.

I am simply amazed that you are so delighted with the timely wonderful response to the disaster. Tell it to the people who have lost their worldly possessions, and those who have lost their loved ones.

Hmm...forced evacuation prior to the storm hitting land would have been the legal responsibility of the local and/or theState Government and not the Federal Government.

Officials of the Army Corp of Engineers have already stated that any plans they had for the levees in the foreseeable future would not have prevented breeches in the levees. The levees were built to withstand a cat 3 and not a cat four or cat 5 hurricane...and the funds that were denied the Army Corp of Engineers would not have altered this fact. They were only going to strengthen the levees is some areas to bring them back up to cat 3 standards.
