Yes the innocent kids suffer but I think it is a lot more complicated than just her being stupid most of the time.
I think the women in these situations have such a low self esteem that they feel they will never find another man or be able to support themselves if they leave and that they deserve to be abused. There is also the "love is blind" angle.
The woman needs counselling to snap out of the "I am a loser" attitude as much as the man needs counselling to deal with the anger and violence he displays.
