Sorry to hear about the trouble. Restraining orders really aren't all that uncommon so he shouldn't worry too much. They are actually pretty typical with a divorce action.
The part that I think is confusing is why were the kids at your father's house? They almost always award custody to the mother. So, it is interesting that your father has the kids with him. The fact that the court allows him to have the kids says something good about him (but it could be saying something bad about your mother).
Now that I think about it, this restraining order also might work against him with any visitation or custody he has with the kids. If your mother is able to demonstrate to the court that he is a serious threat, danger (or whatever) then he might lose any visitation/custody he might have.
