when you live in the city that is not always avoidable however I have a little trick..i used to live in the city in philly and I worked and went to school in North Philly(ghetto) I use to have to take the subway home in the middle of the night and walk through a scary ass alley as i walked home ,and i was a prime target..so i started to talk to myself alot and act as crazy as some of the nuts on the street..i fit right in and nobody bothered me..I also try to make alot of noise so people avoided me
