Anyone ever have to clean out an estate?

im looking for one of those services where they come in and take a look at all the valuable stuff in the house, then find someone to buy it at a reasonable price. For a commission i guess?

Not sure what they are called, how can i find this type of service? Like an antique broker of sorts ...

and how can i insure im not being ripped off?

this isnt 1 or 2 items, its an entire household of ancient stuff lol

a 6 foot cast iron pot belly stove (functional) is one of the items, a hand made italian sofa is another ... so many to list, but some are pretty hefty items.

she is very old and would like to clean out her estate. Asked me to help ... i dunno where to start.

yea i really need one of these guys, so much stuff that just must be worth money.

i recall a few of those old fashioned German mugs (forgot what you call them) that have like people or scenes or some shit on top of the flip top? They are all numbered and hand made ... cant posibly be junk.

dude you need a guy to appraise this stuff and you need a lawyer to make sure the sale of this stuuff is straight and above board or you being involved you could get slammed with all kinds of crap about you scammed this old lady and all kinks of under handed crap. she dies you can't prove shit. get all this in writing with a lawyer.

Get in the phonebook for antique appraisers...

THEN

Call half a dozen or so autioneers and ask who THEY recommend... and go from there. They charge but well worth it. The auctioneers will guide you right tho (taken in a majority not just one) Don't tell them names... ask who they think is best.

My mom is an antique expert and she does a lot of estate sales just like what you are needing, but she aint gonna fly to New York to do it, when she has more than she can handle in Texas

Just ask a local antique dealer, most of them will do it for a commission

I would suggest you have a couple people to come in and appraise the antiques to make sure they are pretty close in their estimates. Be sure to tell them you are having two estimates (that way they won't low ball the prices)

Go through all china cabinets etc. for all nicknacks. Look closely at the marking and search eBay etc. to get a rough idea of how much these things can go for or if they have any value at all.

Have an estate sale. We had one with 5 of us girls handling it. We had prices on most things, we "guesstimated" on anything else. One person remained the cashier and took all the money.

Anything that was not sold and no one in the family wanted was given to charity. It is a LOT of work especially if they had things of value.

No they don't. Estate planning attorneys advise clients and draft wills, living trusts, other tax shielding documents and the like. They don't have anything to do with getting rid of a house full of crap. They may give you the number of a decent estate auction company but that's about it.

When my grandmother died a few years back, we had a company come in auction everything off. The proceeds were split among the three siblings. As for getting ripped-off, you never know. I would advise doing a little research, getting references, and then request a full accounting afterwards. An independent appraiser may be worthwhile if you suspect anything has extreme value. I imagine the process would be similar for someone still alive.
