Actually, given my readings of the Internet in Japan, my guess would be that they maintain close control of what happens on the Internet (Well the Japanese bits anyhow) - they've got a lot of rules & regulations that don't exist elsewhere with regards to what you can sell, and it all has to be government approved, so I'd say this would extend to domain names as well...

You can either be a resident there or, own a corporate entity in the country itself oh and, its not just Japan that has these restrictions other countries do to including Canada.

Everybody can register .jp domains.

Apparently you just have to have a Japanese presence, kinda like you have to get someone to vouch for you to get an apt in Tokyo, but it is not necessarily as complicated as setting up a whole corp or anything. Dot coms are more popular there too though.Comment
