And to think 1982, I ran into a VF copy of XMen #1 for $100. Back in 1982, $100 was a lot of money

Nice collection man. What are you looking to pull? I see that you have a spider man #1 second print in silver there. I have the gold which was the third print. I remember that being the McFarlane torment series!

SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.

Right before I closed my comic book store in 98 the market was so dead I could pick up collections like this for a nickel per book, and that was just for the good stuff.

Have things gotten any better? All the guys I knew down in Florida are out of business now...

DarkBob - I closed my store in 2001. It hasn't gotten much better.
I keep close tabs on the biz and still go to some of the bigger shows looking for signs of a recovery. You would think that with the abundance of comic book movies and video games lately that the actual comic books themselves would gain a little more interest. Unfortunately that is not the case. The glut of the early 90's put a pretty big hurt on the industry and it still shows the scars.
Hopefully sometime soon it will pick back up. I have a 10 year old son who grew up surrounded by comics and he is already bugging me to open another store so that he can have a job when he is old enough lol.

I need to clean out my comic book collection again since I need to free up some space. I usually go through them and take a boxful down to the local thrift store. I get about ten cents for each comic book but they are mostly crappy comics from the 1980s and 1990s.

That's too bad. I was a comic collector for years before I started selling them. I've got lots of good memories from my days as a store owner. I haven't kept up with the business too much though, since I moved to Vegas I started collecting casino chips, so that's pretty much my only hobby now...

I tried selling a bit from when I had my book/comic card store and what little I sold I had to give away on ebay.

Have you tried an ad in a local paper ?

I still have about 16 long boxes sitting behind my computer desk.

Yeah, comics died off at that time cause me and the other artists decided to split.

Too many fanboys runnin' shit and fucking up the industry. Really fucked the storeowners and fans. What happened to comics is the same thing fucking up the online porn industry... greedy half asses who stab each other in the back at the drop of a hat. Then try to corner markets and steal shit blind.

Difference is, on the web to fix things is just one pissed off programmer.

Whatever happen to Dale Keown's PITT? That was a great comic with kickass art. That dude simply stop producing it. It sells quite well too.

Ya, I'm a huge collector too, but I'm keeping all of mine.

With the right advertising, you may be able to get $1k for those on Ebay, but my guess would be lower. I've been selling comics on Ebay since 1997, so I usually have a good idea of what these things will go for. When I got married in 99 I sold off 15 long boxes of my personal collection because I didn't have the space. The collection was worth about $25k retail, sold for 10 cents a book. That's just how the market for comic books is right now. Better to hold onto them for a few more years unless you need the cash or space.

We have five stores in Indianapolis and back issues have never been a big part of our business. New comics make up the bulk of our sales. Every Wednesday, the hardcore fans come in and drop $50-100 on that weeks new comic books that run around $2-3 each these days. It's a legal addiction.

The truth is, the comic book market died around the same time the video game industry really took off (the Nintendo era). Kids just don't read anymore. They have video games, cable televison, and the Internet. Comic books and baseball cards just don't hold the same appeal they once did. We have some young customers at our stores but the majority are adults.

Or they just didn't have time because they were focused on their movie deals or whatever. Look at Todd McFarlane, he hasn't drawn a comic book in years. He left Marvel because he didn't want to be work for hire. He thought an artist should get to own his creations. So then he goes and forms Image and after a year or so, decides to hire a bunch of guys to write and draw his comic for him. Oh well, so much for that philosophy.

I'm wondering because jact has many rare comics etc that we were thinking of selling. And my uncle has the ALL the ORIGINAL spiderman comics (including #1) in mint condition.
As far as I know, no one has produced a mint copy of Amazing Spider-Man #1 from 1963 yet. There have been some 9.8 on a scale of 10.0, but an actually 10.0 would be worth about 10 times guide value as it would be the best copy in the world. That's the definition of mint. Even a NM book from the 60s is pretty damn hard to find...it has to be perfect...glossy with bright white pages...and it has to look like it was bought of the newsstand with tweezers and no one ever touched it and it was stored in a vault for the last 40 years and never exposed to light or dust.

Sam Kieth's stuff still sells well. Jim Lee is stil hot as hell. His Batman was the highest selling book of the year. They guy just draws kickass funny books.

Liefeld and the rest of the Image crew...most of their stuff can be found in the 50 cent bin next to all that Valiant and Defiant crap. I liked to Valiant comic for the first couple years, then they started hiring mediocre artists and writers, probably to save money after Acclaim bought them out. The reason that company was successful in the beginning was quality, and they failed because they decided to go for gimmick covers and other crap instead of putting out a quality product. The only good book from the Acclaim days was Quantum and Woody.
