    Brando was overrated

Don't get me wrong. The guy was a great actor, but he was no James Dean.

    Sorry but you're wrong.

You shouldn't talk bad about those who recently died.....but I assume this rule isn't known to most GFY'ers

I'd rather do that than do what you Kerry liberal faggots do--sip Zinfandel, suck cock, and watch Liza Minelli musicals.

Try comparing his performance in a Streetcar Named Desire to ANYTHING James Dean ever did.

                That's right, there's not one.

Brando set new standards in film and in theater.

                      exactly

Brando started the method acting trend and inspired a whole generation of actors. While Dean was good for what he did, he didn't live long enough to have the large resume that could have been his legacy. Who knows, if his career had lasted another 15-20-25 years, he could possibly still doing the Rebel schtick...

Also, check out his lesser known roles in movies like "The Appaloosa" (my personal favorite Brando role), "Viva Zapata" and "A Dry White Season"

Even in the shitty "Island Of Dr. Moreau" remake, he turned in a great performance...

My only problem with Brando is that I could never understand a single word coming out of his mouth.

My favorite Brando role: Col. Kurtz in "Apocalypse Now" -- Amazing all around. Moreover, a lot of his stuff was adlibbed.

Definitely a great actor. He is greatly appreciated and will sorely be missed.

I thought his best performance was in Last Tango in Paris, closely followed by Appocalypse Now.

But with Brando's resume, with all the great performances, it is hard to argue that SND or OTW were not his best.

Just happy to say I have a dozen of his performances in my library.

sorry but you are talking out of your ass. Dean was in what, three movies? He is iconic because of how he died and because he was good looking and okay in some good movies. Now, Brando was iconic because he was good looking but also because he was in some fantastic movies and because he was a fantastic actor. Oh, and that was before he even heard of the Godfather. On the Waterfront is fantastic, Streetcar Named Desire *was* the making of an icon and geeze he even did Guys and Dolls which is funny just for him actually pulling off singing. A lot better than Clint in Paint Your Wagon, anyway.

Dean and Monroe belong in the same breath. Beautiful, tragic but not the best at acting.

you are mostly correct. lots of affectation you could see. there are a bunch of overrated actors/actresses. katherine hepburn is another.

however, a few parts he really owned and was believable in:

i.e. godfather, and the movie where he played a fence and deniro played a theif.

and then there are many under-rated actors/actresses:

                                          dennis franz comes to mind.

and last night i just saw this gal natalie portman play the orphan with this italian hitman, and she must have been only 11 or 12, and the sophistication of her performance blew me away.

not only is he not over rated, he is one of the best if not the best male actor all time.

You should watch at least some of his movies before you says he's just a great actor

however, a few parts he really owned and was believable in:

i.e. godfather, and the movie where he played a fence and deniro played a theif.

and then there are many under-rated actors/actresses:

                                                dennis franz comes to mind.

and last night i just saw this gal natalie portman play the orphan with this italian hitman, and she must have been only 11 or 12, and the sophistication of her performance blew me away.
some of the current movies do not allow for the acting skill of actors to shine through. the modern actors cannot be compared to actors from 20-50 years ago and before because right now the actors have all the aids of effects and all sorts of new filming techniques to make the movie great without the need for extensive talent. people currently for the most part do not focus on the actual acting of a certain individual but rather on the overall effect of the movie which incorporates all the visual and hearing stimulations that are desgined and computer enchanced.

If you watch a movie such as the godfather part 1, 2, and 3 you will see what acting power is all about. if you watch something like gone with the wind you will also see what acting power is all about. Any of the old time movies that were considered at the time the best can exemplify the true power of the actors much better than any current hollywood made movie.

watch something like Amelie to get a sense of acting skill

I agree with Kimmy. James Dean made three movies. I have seen them over and over. I feel he tried too hard to be Brando. Sure, Brando muttered his way through many movies, but those early movies he did were supreme.

Dean and Brando's personal lives were fucked. Dean died at such a young age that we will never know what he could have done with his acting. I, for one, did not want Brando to grow old and get fat and lose his hair and screw all his maids and get them pregnant. I wanted him to remain the prince of acting.

James Dean played basketball with my uncle. He was not very good in sports regardless of what the media says. He was an average student. He wanted to escape Indiana. I can relate to that. Everyone wanted him to be a success. He was a very confused young man, but so was Brando. "Rebel Without A Cause" had its opening celebration in my home town. Every small town needs a hero.

Both actors were 100% better than the Cruises and the Pitts of today.
