Where could I find a laptop under 1k.. Its not for me, its for a family member so it doesn't have to be anything special. The only thing they do want is 256mb of ram, and a CD-RW burner.

I know a couple of people who bought Dells on ebay and got good deals. Search for Dell laptop. There are also several ebay stores that have virtually brand new ones that they've tested and certified as being a-ok and they're still under warranty from Dell. I just got one from Gateway for right at 1k, and it had a ton of options on it. They had a couple of model that were cheaper. I got 3 times the warranty that Dell was going to give me, and the Dell was going to cost me 400 bucks more for the same thing.
