It's a meter of "importance". It's a logrithmic scale of how "good" your site is compared to every other site on the web. For more competative terms, it seems to play a big role. It's more important that the anchor text of your inbound links be relevant to the content of your site. The content of course factors in keyword density, etc. When it comes to optimizing it's easy to get a #1 spot on a specific not competitive keywords, I get tons of them regularly. When there's 50 other sites optimized just as good as yours PR and luck become huge factors.Originally posted by Choker

Yeah, there's actually a formula you can use to figure out how much PR each page on your site will end up with based on your internal linking structure. It's not exact but when repeated alot of times it's very accurate. A PR8 is very high and will pass ALOT of PR to reciprocal links. Remember it's lothricmic so a PR8 can be considered roughly twice as good as a PR7 and so on(so alot of people believe, me being one of them).Originally posted by Choker

That's the thing, I don't really get how it ended up being spidered let alone get such a big PR boost. Either google is following location headers(which I thought was untrue) or the toolbar is just fucking with you. It's my understanding that sometimes it BS's PR on the toolbar based on similar pages on the sites importance. Like I always thought the GFY threads weren't really PR1, it's just because it's a dynamic page and GFY itself has good PR. Why is your 404 page a PR8?
Answer: Google toolbar GUESSES at what PR ranks should be based off of higher directories or base directory. The PR that google toolbar shows is NOT the PR that google actually uses in its indexing. It is a rough estimate, being as it uses whole numbers. If you want the real PR, use directories that you know google is indexing. Also, base domains have the real PR (to within 1 whole number).

I hear google will fake page rank, also, within the algo...pr is actually calculated on a scale of 1 - 200 I believe. Additionally, putting too much weight on PR will have you running in circles smacking yer peter with a wooden spoon (You'll go Bonkers), backlinks baby, backlinks...they are the heart of pr anyway.

It seems like it is meaning less and less these days. Some of my sites that have the best / highest PR values are falling way back in the SERPS. I think Google has grown tired of allof these PR jockies and is devaluing it to some degree.
I read on WMW that there is about to be a big change in the google algo.

It's probably just a hiccup in the system right now, but if I were you I would optimize the hell out of that page.
