    Design for 800x600 anymore?

I've just been trolling through stats again... Recently had started designing more for 1024x768 and I found that the conversions would stay about the same as when I was making everything for fitting 800x600. I suspect that it's going to jump in favor of the 1024 soon considering the recent trend this small sample shows:

    1024x768 1,084
    800x600 541
    1280x1024 244
    1152x864 104
    1600x1200 59
    640x480 12
    1920x1440 4
    Unknown 1

I don't know why, but people like to have most of their browser window filled and you see better conversion when you do that for the majority. The big no-no is not to have join links below the first panel they see.

Anyway, is anyone else monitoring conversion based on resolution and if so what are you seeing?

I'm making most of my sites about 740 width most of the time.

I'd design so there is no vertical scroll bar when viewed at 800x600.

              1495 who can view a x740 design vs. 553 who'd have to side scroll; roughly 75 / 25%.

The conversions fo the 25% will likely hurt a little because of an "oversized" design, but then vice-versa... an "undersized" design would also likely hurt the 75% of the people able to view at a higher resolution.

I'd go with bigger is better in this case.

              Cheers,

You could serve designs based on screen resolution, but the search engines probably wouldn't like that.

i still design everything to fit 750 width for porn sites. Height doesn't matter as much!
I think it's the safest option for porn surfers... i'd like to experiment and go a bit bigger but not sure if it's worth it really?!

I would try to keep button links in the 800x600 range, other than that I think you can safely use larger sizes... But also making it larger in size usualy makes it larger in Kb, just don't forget the dial-up (yes, still!) users

I hate sites that don't fit in a ~ 600px wide window... That fullscreen bullshit pisses me off.

800x600 4 lyfe though. The average user may have a larger monitor and better video nowadays, but they usually don't know how to increase their resolution anyway

my own stats say it's almost a tie between 1024x768 and 800x600, so for now i'll stick with 800x600.

hrm, just browsing through some stats quick, and noticed webmaster-oriented pages seem to be in favor of 1024x768 by quite a bit, so you could probably get away with desiging webmaster sites in 1024...

with lcd's, they perform best in their "native resolution"... that's where their peak performance is.

a lot of people out there are still on crt's though, probably the majority. crt's are still a luxury for a lot of folk. and, with crts, it doesn't matter what res you run them at. a lot of people don't run their monitors at max resolution because the text and such becomes too small to read. even if they have 17" monitors, they're still using 800x600 because it's easier on the eyes.

I used to as well which actually meant keeping designs at 730x340 (to include room for big browser buttons and scroll bar, etc... It helped conversion noticably (at least to make sure join link is in that frame). Then long form tours got more popular and now it seems the 1024 restricted designs are passing it up.

If you design for 800x600 it's still going to look good in 1024x768 but a page designed for 1024x768 looks like crap at 800x600. Surfers expect the vertical scroll bar but can't grasp the horizontal concept. Especially when we're talking about links and buttons it's important for them to be spoon fed.

Yes, its going down fast yet most of us still design for it. I think in another year or so 800x600 will be a such a smaller percentage than now it will for sure be time to upsize. Even though i still do 760 (or smaller) for most everything, sometimes i wonder if its worth catering to that ever smaller percentage of users. Because, i suspect if folks cant afford a monitor any better than that, then they probably arent going to be sending much money my way either.....

Does no-one use screen resolution redirects?!

If you're making sites 750 px wide then 75% of the time you're losing almost 300px worth of ad slots.

I design for the Commodore 64 and still get a few 100 sign ups a day.

you got to get a clue guys.

go to the computer store and see what is selling, that is what you design for.

Many people I know that use 1024x768 or higher resolutions still have smaller browser windows because they arrange their stuff on the screen in a certain way, e.g. taskbar on the left side or ICQ on the right side (always on top).

I use 1280x1024 on my desktop and 1024x768 on my laptop and I almost never use fullscreen windows.
