AUSTRALIA is a world leader in online pornography with a study revealing the country is the third-largest Internet porn producer outside the US.
The Secure Computing survey found Australia laid claim to more than 5.6 million raunchy web pages, placing it ahead of more populous countries such as Japan, Russia, the Netherlands and Spain.
Only Germany and the United Kingdom topped Australia, with 10 million and 8 million porn websites respectively.
Secure Computing Australia and New Zealand regional manager Eric Krieger said the survey was the first by the company to study the number of porn web pages by their country-specific Internet address, such as ".com.au". American and general addresses, such as .com and .net, were excluded from the study.
Mr Krieger said he was surprised to find so many pornographic web pages at Australian addresses.
"We do seem to have a very large proportion on a pro-rata basis," he said.
"Why that has come out of the survey I think is because we've got exceptionally high PC or IT literacy and the population are very much exposed to that sort of usage."
Internet Industry Association chief executive Peter Coroneos said the high number of smutty .au sites could be due to porn producers in other countries buying Australian Net addresses.
"The only definite conclusion you can draw from the survey is that porn remains a popular form of content on the Internet," Mr Coroneos said.
