Best video encoding workstation on the market.

I am looking to invest into a workstation that will exclusively encode video. Does anybody know where I can find a system built for this purpose?

I realize lots of processor power and ram is required but what else, and how much of it?

I am sure there is a company that builds these systems.

I am definately going to require a dual xenon system, aswell as about 2GB or ECC memory. IS the video card imporatant at all? Im under the impression it makes no difference.

The primary HD will be a 15,000rpm SCSI.

Does this sound right so far?

Now how about sotfware..

Adobe Video Collection Professional.
Canopus DVStorm2 Digital Video Editing System
Matrox RT.X100 Digital Video Editing System
Pinnacle Liquid Edition
Pinncacle Studio Deluxe Digital Video Editing System.

I will be editing directly from DVD and sometimes MiniDV tapes.

Dell sells a system with an encoder pre-installed (or at least they did a year ago). I don't know that it is "the best", but that's what I use. It has worked well for me for more than a year. No problems with it.

The nice thing about buying something like this from Dell pre-installed is that you know that it has been thoroughly tested and there's no bizarre software or hardware conflicts, and you know the system (hd and so on) will be able to keep up with the encoder. If you want to keep it simple I recommend the Dell route. I do a fair amount of encoding (about one days work every two weeks), and the system has been able to keep up so far.

My only regret is not getting two 120 GB hds - the one is almost full already.

dood, if you live in Valencia CA you can take a quick stroll over at
CNCPro http://www.cncpro.com
they are based out of Glendale CA and supply a lot of the animation companies in LA. don't pay too much attention on their website since it's a little outdated but they custom build a couple of monster boxes for me for vid editing with 3 vx900 viewsonic LCD monitors. their shit is tight as hell and stress test it before handing it to you.

2 gig Ram
2 120gig with 8meg cache
Matrox Exteme Pacakge with Premiere 6.0
and a bunch of other shit.

I read a interesting article in DV magazine they tested different components. The cpu made the most diffence for video editing.
Over 1 gig of ram didnt affect speed that much or raid drives or video cards over 64 mb

There are plenty of good dedicated encoding solutions. Go to www.streamingmedia.com and have a look around.

Just so you know, Cleaner has been upgraded to work on a 64 bit platform so I'm guessing the performance of that and a G5 should be what you are looking for.

I've trusted my sites to them for over a decade...
