Nothing has gone wrong. A Republic is strong and stable with a degree of both liberalism and conservatism. A degree of conservatism keeps things from moving too fast which can be very dangerous to the stability of a nation. I offer 1861 as an example.
America progresses is in a liberal direction but just not real fast. You need only look back a generation and see Elvis on TV shot from the hip up to see that. Often, liberal ideas are advocated and argued for by segments of America, taken up by other parts of the world, and then exported back here. It's a large influential society. Sometimes it is in the lead and sometimes not.
