Problems renting an apartment or house being self employed

I know most of the big players in here own their own home. Any renters have problems finding a place and telling the landlord your self employed? I recently moved into my new place but I had several people turn me down because of being self employed. As soon as you mention the word "internet" people think its bullshit or something. I make enough to live off but not to buy my own house yet. Anybody else have that problem or get weird responses when you tell them you work on the net?

I showed them a handful of my checks and they loved me.

But I'm also incredibly sexy. I'm sure that's the real reason.

I simply showed the company my bank statements for the past 3 months and current amount sitting in there, and had 0 problem getting an apartment. They loved me back at that place

Bank Statements or Tax records are a good way to prove your income. I hope this helps

Just recently my fiance and I rented a condo - planning on moving in december. I had to get letters drawn up from the company etc. but they still didnt like the whole internet thing.

After haggling - they realized that I had been doing it for 9 years and then they let us have it. Felt the internet was not a valid work environment.

I was really just wondering their comments or reactions when you mentioned working on the net. Its not a matter if i could prove to them I can pay it, I paid them 6 months up front. Just that most old timers think that the physical get up and go 9-5 is how life should be.

You don't need to go into detail with what you do. Just say that you are a self employed web developer. Usually, for self employed people, they want to see two years tax returns and your bank account statements. From there, you should be alright.

Was this condo privately owned or part of a big apartment complex? Privately owned places can really be picky a-holes.

Are you incorporated? That does make it easier if you are a company.

I shelter the bulk of my pay through my company so my personal income looks like nothing and that discourages renters. I offered to prepay my rent for the year and they suddenly have no problem

Bank statements and last year's tax returns got me approved for several apartments and a home loan.

I don't say I'm self-employed. I say that I work for such and such company (my company) and show them some paystubs (since mine is incorporated). Bank statements, paystubs (even if you gotta make some phoney ones), tax returns, etc. usually will get you in.

You can say that you are employed by your company and your title is maybe Director of Operations. You wouldn't be lying. You just might have to setup someone to answer the phone if they want to verify employment and you might have to PS some pay stubs. Worked for me.

When I rented this house last year, my landlord was nothing but impressed by my income... he looks and says, ok this is for the month good... wait oh this is per week!

Then he wanted to know what I did and how he can as well
