British police do have guns, but don't carry them when on their beat.

When they roll up on you its usually with semi-automatic weapons, and not pistols.

Um, we have armed police. Some are special armed squads - go to the airports, that is where the aversage person will see them msot often. If you live in central London these days you can see them on the streets at times of increased threats.

Also, very few wear the old fashioned hats these days.

I really wouldn't underestimate the British when it comes to their police.
