This is a great step for free speech. If you don't want to hear the word "fuck" then don't listen to a radio show that might use it and don't watch a TV show that will say it. You know the difference between a show that will use it and one that won't.

by the way, with all this digital technology, i cant believe cable companies don't come up with an optional language filtering solution. it should be the viewers choice to decide on what is going to be censored on the show he/she's watching

not sure who said censorship teaches right or wrong but it wasn't me. I tell my kids what i think is appropriate behavior. I won't openly subject my child to violence or nudity on tv shows though.

i didn't know that. very good point. networks will only push the viewing public so far...

We do not use foul language around our children, we don't allow other people to do so. I don't feel that as sheltering so much as trying to set a good example about what's rude or not. They HAVE heard those words, and we have explained to them why they are not acceptable.. But hearing them on tv... well that would be pretty crummy. Maybe that's just me though.
And there's not a damn thing wrong with this practice. I know you LM, and somehow I don't see you as "sheltering" them from the world. When they are THAT little, they SHOULD be taught it isn't nice and so on.... you seem to me to be the type to shelter them from what will harm them but at the same time preparing them for the world..... HUGE difference babe.

I have had friends who are like you and when I am around them, I mind my manners and respect their wishes.

To ME, I shelter mine from drunks, not people who drink, but DRUNKS...... that's MY thing, I am scared of drunks, and what I fear, I shelter them from. MY think is sheltering them from things that may cause them physical harm, not words, but this isn't to say that those parents who DO censor their kids from words such as shit, fuck, and damn are bad. It's a to each his own kind of thing with me.

The point here is that you take the time to monitor them, not just leave them there and forget them. THAT is what kills me.

I don't think this'll change much. Basic cable isn't regulated by the FCC yet they don't use "fuck" either due to advertisers. Rarely they will show a program that uses fuck and the works.

so true tam everyones parenting is different and non should be judged for the way they parent because we don't live with them. I don't even know how this got turned into parenting thing anyway. I can't stand people use tv as a babysitter

This is long overdue. We need to stop the censorship, because anything we don't hear on TV, we hear everywhere else.

Kids are going to hear these words no matter what. School, the mall, the skate park, the playground. A parent who censors their children is a parent who is completely ignorant. If your kid hears these words, it is the parent's job to teach them that it's not appropriate to use. Likewise, as a parent of younger children, you should make sure that your child isn't watching mature programming until they are mature enough to do so.

Kids who grow up trash, will use these words like they mean nothing (they already do). Educated children will use these words when they feel a need to express a certain emotion (like they already do). This will not change anything other than making television more pure for those mature enough to enjoy television like this.

Fuck! It's so pathetic... You americans can live with TV shows that display gruesome murders, but can't accept the use of the word "fuck"... Grow up!

About time they stop censoring that kind of stuff. I hear people saying fuck all day. Why should they pretend it doesn't exsist? All kids know the swear words from their parents, friends, or music anyways.
